Suzan Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 DD7 is burping all the time. It's not consistant, it seems like she's doing it on purpose but she says she isn't. Sometimes the burp just surprises us all. She does not try to conceal it or minimize it. I've been wondering about gut health, candida, etc. But today I wondered if it was a tic. She will cry and ask why is she burping so much. She is not super self aware so it's hard to ask her questions that get any insightful responses. She's on 500 mg of zith 3 times a week and I've got her on a high dose probiotic. Susan
Worried_Dad Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Our ds13 had this as well: a relentless burping tic that drove my wife and I nuts! He swore he could not control it, and it was ubiquitous during exacerbation. As he recovered, it gradually diminished and disappeared. I think these poor kids really do have tics that are unusual but which they are powerless to stop. Our ds's screeching vocal tic was even more nerve-rattling than the burping, and I know there are lots of other kids on the forum with a wide variety of strange vocal and motor tics (coughs, sniffs, snorts, repeated words or phrases, elaborate hand and arm movements, etc.). Lauren Johnson's sneezing tic is another striking example! I don't know how best to handle these. My wife and I just tried to ignore it, because bringing it to our son's attention always seemed to make things worse. DD7 is burping all the time. MomWithOCDSon Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Wow, a burping tic! And I keep thinking I've heard it all! If it isn't, by chance, a tic, it might be some of the other supplements. Fish Oil/Omega 3 makes makes our entire family belch like a bunch of hillbilly's after a big Sunday dinner!
Phasmid Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 To be on the safe side, have you considered this might be due to acid reflux? This does cause burping. One of the over the counter reflux meds wouldn't be harmful, and you could then rule out reflux.
MMC Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Yes, I believe it could be a tic. Our 11 yr old son has had several strange tics. The lip biting tic was a strange one...could not stop biting/sucking his lip until it had a sore. It went away after about 2 weeks, thankfullly. He now has a toe dragging tic when he walks. After about 5 steps, he will tap his foot and drag his toes on the ground. But, doesn't slow him down much. He even did it barefooted around a swimming pool this past weekend until his toes were scraped and red. He has had other toe tics, hand and finger rubbing tics until he has made a callous. Has had an abdominal tic for over a year, head and neck jerking tics are common also...back tics also. All drive him and us crazy. Any muscle that can move in the body can become a repetitive tic...it's whatever the brain decides to "pick on". Some last a long time, some go away after a couple of weeks. He has even developed new tics after one round of IVIG. We are waiting on the doctor to persuade insurance to approve another treatment.
Kay Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 MMC, Can you explain the abdominal tic that your son had? My daughter (19) just a couple of weeks starting to think that the muscles in her stomach could be a tic. They seem to be like intense cramping not to be confused with real cramping of the bowels, more like a hand clenching. Is this how you would describe his abdominal tic? It would be nice to know if it was a tic and not nerves. thanks. Kay Yes, I believe it could be a tic. Our 11 yr old son has had several strange tics. MMC Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Hello Kay...the tic is like a quick clenching of the ab muscle and a release, lasting a split second. Almost like someone doing a really quick ab crunch. His entire body will move when he does it. Happens hundreds of times during the day, especially when laying idle, watching TV. So, it is not an inner cramping, it is more like an ab muscle tic. He's had this tic for at least a year, I would say. MMC,Can you explain the abdominal tic that your son had? lynn Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Just wanted to add that DS does at times have a burping tic, which is preferable to the other tic that expels gas elsewhere He also has had a number of different stomach clenching tics. He hates these.

Suzan Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 Thanks all, I appreciate the thoughts! Since my other dd is having acid reflux and candida issues, I am looking into that for her to be sure, but will also pay attention to the possible burping tic. On another note, behavior in general at my house has been horid and I'm starting to fall apart about which is PANDAS and which is from poor parenting or rotten stages in kids. How can we keep it all straight. Susan
