worriedmommy
Anyone has tried nettle for allergies? Zyrtec works really well for my son but am looking into more natural way to manage his histamine level. Pat Not sure if you're referring to the NetiPot. Dd6 uses that and it is AWESOME!! This being said, it was not an adequate replacement for Zyrtec. We replaced Zyrtec this year with 2 nasal sprays (Patanase, which is an antihistamine, and Veramyst, which is a steroid), and she's been doing way better than when just on Zyrtec. patty
Nettle is a herb. Does the steriod aggravate tics or OCD (If any) symptoms? Does your child has asthma? If so, what works for you? I do wish my son would use a neti pot tho! Thx! Pat

I do wish my son would use a neti pot tho! Thx! Pat I have not noticed any negative reaction to the steroid nasal spray. The docs told me that the nasal spray is not systemic, so there are rarely negative side effects. My child does have asthma, but only mild intermittent, so she's not on daily meds for that. patty
Does your child have asthma after a cold? excercise induced? any coughing out of the blue? My son has asthma after a cold and excercise induced. However, the last couple of mos., he would cough out of the blue, in the morning and lying in bed with mucus in throat??? Once the coughing start, then more sneezing and blowing his nose or vice versa then a cold would come on. Is this years' allergy that bad? His asthma is mild, so only use Intal or albuteral as needed. What kind of asthma med does your child use? Do you find that by keeping the nasal allergy better, the asthma is better as well? Any idea on controlling the cough? Pat
GraceUnderPressure
Anyone has tried nettle for allergies? Zyrtec works really well for my son but am looking into more natural way to manage his histamine level. Pat Pat, we have used a product called D-Hist which is stinging nettles combined with n-acetylcysteine & vit C, quercetin & bromelain. We have not used Zyrtec or any of the other Rx or OTC antihistamines so I have no ability to compare, nor have we tried nettles alone, but I can at least tell you that D-Hist worked well for us - in fact, I am online about to reorder some now. ~Grace
patty
Thx Grace! I just started quercertin w/my kids today and bought Histamine take care by New Chapter which is stinging nettle. How long does it take for the D-hist to kick in when you start taking it? Also, what is the dosage that you use? Pat
GraceUnderPressure
Thx Grace! I just started quercertin w/my kids today and bought Histamine take care by New Chapter which is stinging nettle. How long does it take for the D-hist to kick in when you start taking it? Also, what is the dosage that you use? Pat Our Dr. told us to use the loading dose of 2 caps 3xday for 10 days, then use a maintenance dose of 1 per day (going back up to 2 or 3 pills when or if needed, but we never needed to) It was kind of like a gradual drying up so it's hard to pinpoint, but within a couple of days, it seemed to be doing the trick & by day 3 or 4 I think it was, I was pretty certain that I was getting relief (I tend to be very cautious before giving credit to supplements) Here's a website that has detailed info on D-Hist http://www.healthdesigns.com/ortho-molecul...0-capsules.html Though I have found it the cheapest here http://www.myhealth-store.com/524120.html There is also a chewable form for kids who can't swallow a capsule, but it doesn't taste so good - my then 3 yr old wouldn't take it, & though he's generally not that easygoing about supplements, I can usually find a way to persuade him. I generally like New Chapter's stuff, we have used their mushroom & salmon oil supps, but be aware that their Histamine Take Care has at least 4 ingredients that are most likely corn based. I have seen several posts over at a GAPS diet forum that I have been frequenting where the moms were talking about how much quercetin helped reduce their kids food issues as well as environmental allergies (which is interesting given the recent article about a histamine connection to all this stuff). They are using quercetin long term rather than just seasonally - one mom said over a year. Given our increasing food intolerances, I think we may just try it that way as well. If we can afford it along with all the other stuff, sigh.
patty
graceunderpressure, Thx for your feedback and the info on quecertin. My son also has food & environmtal allergies. Any experience w/the use of quecertin increase tics or OCD for your child? I started w/250mg of quecertin on Sat and the next day, my son's old OCD symptom came back. Not sure if it is a coincident. He has been fighting off a cold/cough/allergy for the last 7 days. I am going to slowly increase the quecertin to 500mg a day. Our ND recommended to start w/1500 to 2000 mg a day. It seems high to me. So i will check w/her again. My son is 10 & about 72 pds. pat

Multiple food allergies and environmental allergies. He was miserable this allergy season, increase in tics with all the pollen in the air. The Quecertin has been good for us, he's been on it for about 7 months, but we also added Pulsatilla now because he needed better relief. Great to see we are on the same path! Good luck! Or it could be some other filler that he is reacting to maybe? We've always used quercetin in combination products like D-Hist or our vitamin C supplement from Vitamin Shoppe. I've never noticed them to trigger anything in my guy, but then you know how variable these triggers are for our kids. Yeah, the dose does sound high. Ours ranges to ~half of our vitamin C dose. I've been seeing max adult dosages of 800 - 1000mg. Even in this interesting study - Reversal by quercetin of corticotrophin releasing factor induced anxiety- and depression- like effect in mice. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20447436 The max dose for the mice would work out to 1300mg. I would definitely double check with her. ameecram, I'm not familiar with pulsatilla. I see that it is generally considered useful for depression or anxiety - does it also help with allergies? P.S. How do y'all change the headers or titles of your replies?

If we could keep those under control, I don't think he would be ticcing at all right now. And the only tic he has is a snorting type tic from the sinus drainage. We just started Vit C as well.
