If DS just turned 5 and hasn't had strep since he was 8-9 months old (and that was the only time)? The only other relevant info is that he had this 5yo vaccines 5 days before tics started....

Thank you!!!

Well, that's not a lot of information to go on just yet, but you might as well investigate.

Just because your DS isn't symptomatic for strep doesn't mean he hasn't contracted it or been exposed to it necessarily. Has he been exposed recently, do you know? Any friends or relatives have it? And, unfortunately, strep isn't the only potential infectious agent; PITANDS expands the definition beyond strep, and some potential trouble-makers are viruses and another bacteria like Myco P.

I would read some of the pinned threads here at the top of this forum and see if any of the behavioral or environmental things seem to fit. Lots of PANDAS kids have been noted as getting worse following vaccines, but I don't know that any of displayed their first "sudden onset" following vaccinations.

I'm sure some of the more experienced parents will chime in here soon!

Welcome. I have to ask some follow up questions.

-How severe was the onset of tics?

-Are there any other symptoms? Following is a ist of some of the possible symptoms. Not all have to be present...

•Obsessions (e.g., preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety)

•Compulsions (e.g., an irresistible impulse to act, regardless of the rationality of the motivation)

•Choreiform movements (e.g., milk-maid grip, fine finger playing movements in stressed stance)

•Emotional lability (e.g.,irritability, sudden unexplainable rages, fight or flight behaviors) (66%)

•Personality changes (54%)

•Age inappropriate behaviors particularly regressive bedtime fears/rituals (50%)

•Separation anxiety (46%)

•Oppositional defiant disorder (40%)

•Tactile/sensory defensiveness (40%)

•Hyperactivity, impulsivity, fidgetiness, or inability to focus (40%)

•Major Depression (36%)

•Marked deterioration in handwriting or math skills. (26%)

•Daytime urinary frequency/enuresis (12%)

•Anorexia (particularly fear of choking, being poisoned, contamination fears, fear of throwing up)

-I would also ask what kind of baby was he? Was he overly clingy, colicly, poor sleeper, heavy into rituals (ie. bedtime routine)?

-Have you taken him in for a strep test since the onest of tics? Even w/o symptoms, a child can have strep and the vaccine could in some kids put the immune system into overload.

-Currently, what is your doctor suggesting?

I'm assuming by your name on the forum you are a stay at home mom? Am I right? SAHM's know their kids. I'm one. If you're instinct is telling you something isn't right, follow your gut.

Hi again

I didnt notice reference to the vaccines when you posted on the TS forum but there are a number of anecdotal reports there of parents correlating the onset of tics with a round of vaccinations

if you search there with the keyword vaccination or vaccines you should bring up a lot of posts.

it seems for some kids with susceptibility, that immune reaction that the vaccines bring can also be a tic trigger

that is not to say that you should not also explore the very real possibility of an infection connection!

it does seem that at least for some of our kids, there can be more than one trigger at work to compound their condition
