Bummer! As of the new year our insurance won't cover Augmenti

Just for a heads up, as of the new year United Healthcare has taken Augmentin XR off the list of drugs they cover, at least under our plan. Dr. T is going to try to sort it out with them but he didn't sound very hopeful. It cost $265 a month without insurance. I paid for this next month but cannot continue to do that. Not sure what Dr. T will recommend as an alternative. At her weight, the 2000mg dose ofregular Augmentin has too much clavulonic acid in it.

 

I'm frustrated.

So what if, each dose you could do 1/2 amox and half regular aug? would that work? you'd be getting the same amox, but only 1/2 the clav.

Also, call around. Different pharmacies charge different amounts. I found that out with one prescription.

We have United Healthcare Choice. I have not tried Clindamycin. Never heard of it, actually. I did mix the Augmentin and the Augmentin XR for a while to use up the regular augmentin I had after we switched. Not sure if it would have been approved or not.

For regular Augmentin, I paid like $30 for 1000mg/day for two weeks worth of pills. Again, that's with United Health Care.

 

I don't have co-payments with them, but often you get a discount with a pharmacy with your insurance.

The other thing you can try, since the regular augmentin was tried and found ineffective (wasn't it?) for your child is to try to get an exception to cover the XR.

Does UHC have mail order prescriptions? If so, sometimes companies will not cover an item in the pharmacy but will cover it in mail order when ordered in 3 month batches.

 

Otherwise did someone once mention that stores like Walgreens have something you can join and get discounts on scripts?

 

Finally, if your work offers Health Savings Acoount, those can be used for scripts and are taken out pre-tax. That's nice since you can't deduct prescriptions on taxes otherwise.
