crazy
I took my son to quick care yesterday because the school nurse was concerned with a white thing on his tonsils. Took the rapid test and it was negative. The doctor called it tonsil stones and pushed it right out. I got a call today from the nurse and the 24 hour test came back postive! He has no signs of being sick. He looks and feels great. I asked about this and they said maybe he is a carrier of strep. What does that mean? He will take an antibiotic. What do I do now? We acturally go to the neurologist Saturday for a Topamax refill. Should I ask him? He is 98% tic free since August. Could this be Pandas ? What is Pandas? ajcire
You might want to post over on the PANDAS board. It is full of very knowledgeable people Why did the school nurse check his tonsils if he felt fine? faith
crazy, if I were you, I would go and repeat the swab and culture with another doc just to make sure. then you can discuss with that doctor what they found. the tonsil stone thingy could be food embedded in the crypts of the tonsil, I had that once and the doctor pulled it out and sait its food that gets stuck in there, like mushy bread. If you say your son is 98% tic free since August? I don't know if I would do anything to rock that right now. he has no sore throat? if he is a carrier and no symptoms of anything, I would wait it out and see. The only reason some like to give abx for the strep carrier kids is to make sure they don't get an active infection. If you don't see infection now and he has now symptoms of tics or ocd kicking up, then I think you are okay. this doesn't mean PANDAS, it doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't start suspecting PANDAS unless you see obvious symptoms stemming from this. What have you been doing in the meantime to control symptoms? colleenrn
The whole strep carrier thing is "controversial"... IMO, if your child has PANDAS, or has Tourette's or OCD, being a carrier is not benign as some people think it to be. What antibiotic is he on and at what dose? I do not see any reason for repeating a positive strep culture. If it is positive it needs to be treated. I would very closely observe him to see what changes occur while he is on the antibiotic.
