CarolynN
Hello, I just wanted to share something I figured out last night after doing some research. My son Daniel who is 9 and has had tics since he was 3 reacts to MSG the worse with his tics. He also reacts to food dyes, vanillin, and high fructose corn syrup. But MSG seems to be the worse of all offenders. So over Thanksgiving I homemade a pumpkin pie. In that pumpkin pie recipe it called for a can of evaporated milk. You would think by now I would know better then not to read the back of a can but I did not. So anyhow, Daniel ends up, over the course of 3 to 4 days, eating at least 1/2 the pie. He starts getting a head shaking tic and he also started getting headaches. At first I was attributing it to other things he had eaten, but I knew this reaction seemed similar to past MSG reactions. It dawned on me last night to check out what was in the evaporated milk and the websites I checked out said that people who are sensitive to MSG will also react to carrageenan. Carrageenan is one of the main ingredients in the evaporated milk. Carrageenan is also apparently very prevelant in soy milk products. When I was doing my research last night I found out that carrageenan causes a lot of stomach related issues in many people. Some people get really sick from it. I also read that they use it to make some common products like glue (so that tells you something right there) I just share this because I know when you are trying to figure out what is causing someone to tic the puzzle of it can get so frustrating. But I now know to stay away from evaporated milk and products containing carrageenan. Carolyn
Chemar
Hi Carolyn yes we have had the same experience with carrageenan and I had posted about it a few times it not only messes with my sons TS, but it causes flare up of his GIT/Crohn's symptoms too it is becoming like HFCS...in almost everything...it is even in organic products like cream, ice cream etc
ilovedogs
Wow, that is really interesting, as usual! I also made a few pumpkin pies and I used the evaporate milk and I didn't see any increase in tics or anxiety. Actually, he's been improving the past few weeks so I've not seen anything affect the tics. I really wish I knew what our triggers were b/c I don't think food additives are it for us. Although, I try to stay away from them in general. B
