Suzan Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 So, this question has probably been asked many times before.... but can increasing antibiotics help in only one day? We increased the zith to 500mg daily last night after our bad night last night. This morning was super great and tonight now has been amazing. Pills taken (without me even asking ), washed the dishes and enjoyed it, laughed, had fun, danced around. She had a little trouble with her homework but not too bad. It's the best day we've had in months. Dare I do the happy dance? Well, even one great day deserves a happy dance. Susan PS... We start Valtrex soon to try to clear any virus that may be stuck in side. I decided to wait until the weekend before we start so I can get a feel for how this abx increase will do.

Where did you get that cute dancing bean?!?! I say that deserves a happy dance! Hope it lasts - I always try not to celebrate or to panic until 3 days have passed. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next 2! I felt like we could see results very fast in terms of intensity, but we were clocking her very closely, so the changes were small but noticable for the first week.
Guest Angela Shaw Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 So, this question has probably been asked many times before.... but can increasing antibiotics help in only one day? I have no personal experience, but I've read where some kids have rallied after one day on an increased dose. I hope it continues! I wrote to our doctor today and emailed it to her before we go see her tomorrow to let her know what I'm thinking. When I updated her I told her that we had only seen very limited improvement on the dose that dd is on. However, today after I wrote turned out to be a fantastic day. She's been able to play on the PC for hours and actually enjoy it rather than get stuck clicking the same button over and over. Her mood has been fantastic too. Plus other things have seemed easier today. Gives me hope, that's for sure. Glad your having a good day. Enjoy every moment. Angela
mama2alex Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 So glad to hear this! I agree, one good day definitely deserves a happy dance!

Someone showed me this site a while back for finding fun things..... http://bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htm I totally agree that this is way too soon to get too happy but man it's nice to have a good evening. I will watch her too and try not to be too disapointed if it doesn't stick. Susan

monarchcat Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 That's great that you had a great day! How long do you plan on staying on the higher dose of azith? We are on 250mg/day now and I flirt with the idea of increasing it because we are just not seeing consistent results. We have a great day or two then a backslide for awhile. We had a few crappy days and then I gave one advil yesterday and one this morning and things have been great...no idea if it's coincidence or not! The good days are so nice! Hope they continue for you!
peglem Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 Back when we were still doing a new course of abx and waiting a week for the strep to come back (that was a vicious cycle)...zith was the one that we saw huge improvements with w/in a day. Yeah, for you!
Suzan Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 monarchcat - we were on 250 mg daily (she's 8 and 70 lbs) so I decided to double it. I thought I'd do it for a week and see how it goes. If it's working, I'll call our doc and see what he says. I don't want to burn through my abx and not have enough, you know?! I bet that advil did work for you, I find that if I use it every day, I don't notice that it helps but if I take breaks, it starts helping again for a while. s

Hope they continue for you! Advil makes a HUGE difference for my dd. 1 or sometimes 2 per day decrease her symptoms by at least 80%. I doubt its a coincidence. I just figured that out with my dd about ten days ago. We've had the best ten days in a LONG time.
faith Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 Since we are talking here about advil, could someone explain something? if the idea of the advil is for anti-inflammatory, then what wer're doing is trying to decrease inflammation? but if you take it for a week or so, and it does actually help reduce inflammation, then shouldn't that be it? I mean, if the inflammation decreases, does it go back up, is that it? and why? maybe this is a dummy question, because I guess people with arthritis get constant inflammation and have to always take advil or things like that to help ease their pain, but I guess I'm thinking once the inflammationi is down, shouldn't it be permanent?.... Faith
monarchcat Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 I believe that if whatever is triggering the inflammation (antibodies and breach in the BBB) is not removed then the inflammation will continue (just be reduced while the advil is in their system). In my son's case I am curious about whether the advil is really having an effect because I really don't know that we saw any real measurable results from his recent course of steroids. I can't imagine that one advil is going to do more for inflammation than 30mg/day of prednisone. But, who knows... it seems to have helped. I didn't give him one this morning (and he was calm and in a good mood), so we'll see what today brings after school. Monarchcat, I agree. We noticed quite accidentally an improvement on Advil but strangely not on Aleve (we were trying to see about extended release). I later learned that Aleve didn't contain ibuprofen. So it looks like something specific to ibuprofen. Back when I was researching this I found several nice papers on Cox-2 inhibitors in Alzheimer's Disease. I'll track them down. Our immulonogist did think what we were seeing then and from IVIG may be mostly due to the anti-inflammatory properties. He even thought that perhaps the effect we were seeing from azithromycin might be the anti-inflammatory property. It's an interesting thought. Regards, Buster
