Is there any easy way to know if your child has too much yeast? I have no real reason to suspect my ds does but being he is on antibiotics and I know nothing about probiotics, which kind, where to get he hasn't been on any.. when we are home he takes an acidopholus chewable tablet in the middle of the day because I was thinking I need it to to not be near the morning or night when he takes the antibiotics? I have a bad feeling that I have totally messed up his system by not following some sort of plan ... the dr. never said anything.. when I asked about if there was something I should do to make sure his tummy was ok he just said to give him an acidopholus if I wanted.

I am going through the same balancing act with my daughter. I do think she suffers from too much yeast...she's been complaining lately of an itchy tush...which is a sign. I went to our local health food store and the guy who owns it is like the Ghandi of all things natural. Anyway, I started my daughter on Kefir, which is a fortified goat's milk drink that you can buy flavored. I have her drink that which acts like a welcoming blanket for the probiotics she takes a few hours later. I was told that the Kefir makes the probiotics more effective and last longer and kind of "hugs" them as they enter the stomach. He recommended a good liquid probiotic as she can't swallow pills. He also recommended oil of oregano (drops) for a month, then switch to garlic oil (drops) for the next month and keep switching back and forth so she doesn't get too used to it and it works more effectively. He also to me to try and end the day with some probiotics as it can sit in the stomach overnight and have a lasting effect. Oh, the Oregano Oil and garlic oil are supposed to be natural anti-fungals.

I will report on any success we have...this is all new to me as well!!

We just did IVIG with our Twin boys with PANDAS. I know I should be patient and give it time to work, but that is proving difficult.

Things seemed a little better starting yesterday. It was the first night in months that one of our sons did not have a raging tantrum. Getting thru today without a problem until we went for ice cream. Almost immediatly my son began a tantrum that lasted over an hour.

Wondering if the sugar or yeast could be making this worse. Has anyone noticed a significat difference directly after thier child has eated sugar?

Yes. My son gets tics with his PANDAS and I believe he had strep in his gut which has since messed things up. He can't even have something as simple as fruit juice. His diet is somewhat strict for now. Kathy

Yes, our son's behavior has always (since age 3) been worse after he eats sugar. He is also on a sugar-restricted diet (no juice here either!) Once PANDAS hit full force, we noticed that eating sugar increases his PANDAS symptoms.

We originally discovered the yeast through a DAN doctor. The lab test was a Comprehensive Stool Analysis/Parisitology. In addition to showing which bacteria were overgrown, it showed which pharmaceutical products (Augmentin, tetracycline, Nystatin, etc) and which supplements (caprylic acid, oregano, uva ursi, etc) would be most effective in treating which bacteria.

i think the yeast issue is tough. many of my sons pandas presenting behaviors were yeast behaviors. i think there is definitely some relationship - although i can't seem to understand it. my thought is that the strep infiltrates the gut which causes an imbalance and the yeast takes the opportunity to further the imbalance.

my son is on quite a restrictive diet - no dairy, gluten or eggs. we don't restrict sugar - other than what comes naturally to not eating these other items. this summer, we liked to go to Rita's Ice - he can have the italian ice but it is quite high in sugar. in the spring/early summer - i did seem to think he got a bit wild before we'd even left the shop after eating it. he didn't seem to do this with other sugar like muffins or cookies - or even candy. maybe it's a more concentrated sugar hit if it's ice cream/ice - ?.

i was just looking back at posts from Dr. McCandless on this forum - they're old - '03 i think. at that time, she was recommending Aqua Flora. it's a homeopathic product that is similar in theory and ingredients to how we are treating my son's pandas (although we're not using the candida product). does anyone have experience with this?

one thing i remember reading when i was trying to research yeast - it's so extensive, it's difficult - was that it's really not the yeast that is the issue. it's the imbalance and the fact that the immune system is not able to keep it in check. we spend so much time trying to eradicate the strep and eradicate the yeast - i really do believe it needs to be the balance that's important.

coco - i have not used oregano oil although have thought about it. my understanding was to not use if for more than a few days at a time?

I have not heard that. I've just been googling it and there seems to be no warning about extended use. I will try it for a month in conjunction with the other probiotic stuff and see how she does on it.

Here is what I have learned and applied to my son's protocol regarding yeast:

When on an antibiotic, be sure to include Saccharomyces Boulardii, a type of probiotic that is actually a "good" yeast and cannot be killed by the antibiotic.

Take regular probiotics ("good bacteria") away from antibiotic.

When giving things like Oil of Oregano, keep in mind that it also kills bacteria, so you need to give regular probiotics away from this, too.

It is best to rotate antifungal drugs/herbs every 4 days, otherwise the yeast develops a resistance to it.

We had quite a yeast problem after the first few days of antibiotics. The signs in my son were: bedwetting, night waking, acting extremely silly at inappropriate times, crashing and jumping off of the couch, bouncing off the wall in general. Here is my antifungal rotation (switch every four days and then repeat): Pau D'arco, Oregon Grape, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Oil of Oregano (there are other things that kill yeast, I think you are supposed to have at least 3 things in your rotation, I have 4 for no particular reason). It is hard to fit all of this in the day, as everything needs to be given away from each other, but it can be done and for my son it really works. Good luck!
