smartyjones Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Our new psych suggested the possible use of benadryl for freak-outs/rages/known strong anxiety triggers. I had seen it mentioned here but didn't really understand. She said she has some moms that carry it in their purses. Any stories from anyone?
peglem Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 I've heard plenty of people who say it has been great for them. I've tried using it for my daughter to help her sleep...and it does do that, but 1st we get a big, hellacious rage (I'm talking demon-possessed type here)...so we don't use it anymore.
thereishope Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 I use Benadryl when my son's allergies start. PANDAS behaviors surface with his allergies. I have no problems with Benadryl. It stabilies his allergies and, in turn, his PANDAS behavior stabilize as well. He is tired only on the first day I use it, but no rages, no hyperactivity, etc. Honestly, you may just have to try it to see how your child reacts.
pixiesmommy Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 We can't get this into her if she is in a rage, but we have used it to help with sleep on occasion. However, I do try to avoid it because of all the artificial stuff in it. We have started using the gel-caps now that she is old enough to take that dosing. They dye-free adult gel-caps are pretty pure. Some kids react with hyperactivity rather than it being calming though, so be aware that it may make things worse rather than better.
Stephanie2 Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 My opinion is that advil would be a better choice. BUT, I am going to keep this one in the back of my mind, just in case. Make sure you use dye-free just in case red dye is a trigger for more aggression. Stephanie Our new psych suggested the possible use of benadryl for freak-outs/rages/known strong anxiety triggers.
