ajcire Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I totally forgot this time (kids are currently on antibiotics for strep) to replace their brushes.. I need to go out and buy some more in bulk. How often do you change them for your kids?

thereishope Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I change them every 3 months unless strep or some illness hits the house. I try to make sure the brushes do not touch each other. My PANDAS son conveniently got a cover with his brush so his is totally separate from the rest. I keep meaning to gte separate kids' toothpaste for my kids, but keep forgetting. If your kids like kid tooth brushes, they usually have some licensed ones at the dollar store. Much cheaper than Taregt or Walmart. I've seen Spiderman, Care Bear and more.
EAMom Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 They also sell some toothbrushes in packs of 2 which are cheaper vs. buying them individually. I also buy the travel size toothpaste (50 cents at target) so each kid has their own and I can throw it out in case somebody gets sick.
mom md Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I change mine each months. I have no data to base that on but it is cheap and makes me feel better.
ajcire Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 Oh goodness! I never even thought about the fact they slobber their brushes all over the toothpaste. I need to buy separate toothpaste.. I wish I read this before I ran to the store. I did ok... I found a 4 pack for 3.99 that will do the trick for now... I think I will put on my list of things to keep an eye out for every time they have any on sale/coupons.

pixiesmommy Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I read last year that you should change every month during flu season, so I change every month anyway or with illness. I also turn them upside down every few days and soak them in hydrogen peroxide. It's also a rule in my house that you close the toilet lid before you flush, so the toothbrushes don't get sprayed with microbes. If you can't institute that rule, putting the toothbrushes in a closed cabinet would be better than on the counter top too.
FallingApart Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 Does running the toothbrushes through the dishwasher do anything for us? Or is that just making me feel safer but isn't really doing anything. I run them through the dishwasher each week. I've been thinking about using a wipe on the tube of toothpaste as well.
smartyjones Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 i see in my brookstone catalog that they have a toothbrush sanitizer - it uses uv germicidal light to disinfect. they range from $30-50. Does anyone know anything about that? would the hydrogen pyroxide work just as well? i used to have my boys use electric b/c they don't brush as well themselves. i stopped b/c they're more expensive to throw out all the time.
