The dr. I saw for ds about pandas told me that if I got him the flu shot to get the flu mist. I did get my 2 year old a flu shot because he has asthma... My ped office doesn't offer the flu mist and it's a pain to get to this dr. for the flu mist.

Did anyone here give their child the regular flu vaccine?

Should I be skipping it altogether like I always have in the past?

My vote.....skip it...especially the mist because it is a live viral treatment....the shot is not. Very surprised your doc recommended it. No vaccines here!

During our recent phone consult with Dr. K, I asked about vaccines. He said he's had several PANDAS cases where the child had a recurrence after a viral vaccine. He thought it was "risky."

That is interesting. I wonder why he suggested the mist over the shot.... Glad I couldn't get it at my ped or I might have done it already. I am going to skip it for him altogether for sure. The dr. had said he felt if he got the flu it could trigger a flare up to though.

Well, I'm anti live vaccine now. Even though a few have told me they get the flu shot every year, even w/ PANDAS, I think I am skipping that too. Now, in a different forum, someone asked the same question then contacted Dr Cunningham and asked her. Dr Cunningham didn't say anything negative about either.

I would still err on the side of caution and opt for the shot over mist if you really want to vaccinate.

erica,

If you do decide to vaccinate, please GET A COPY OF THE VAX INSERT PRIOR TO ALLOWING INJECTION and make sure that it doesn't contain the preservative thimerosal.

You could also just get the name of the vaccine your Ped's office is using and look up the insert online. Many Doc's offices don't seem to know that the flu vaccines still contain thimerosal (mercury). If it is a single dose injection, it is probably thimerosal free (check anyway) but if it is drawn from a multidose vial, it probably is in there. You should be able to find a mercury free vaccine if you call around.

Flu mist IS live. There has been some speculation that the live viral nasal vaccine has ready access to the brain which might be particularly bad if the blood brain barrier is compromised. I just posted an article regarding people who may be at greater risk from flu (H1N1 anyway). If there is anything to that article, I wonder what the odds are that a person with low immune function would benefit from the vaccine anyway. Just do your homework before you make any decision. You might want to look up the recent study that found an increase rate of hospitalization in kids with asthma who had recieved the flu vaccine. Maybe you could print it and take it to your Dr. to discuss if you'd like. If you're interested and can't find the article, let me know!

Why do vaccine officials ignore adverse effects of thimerosal, aluminum, and squalene?

Dr K told us no vaccines period.

Our immunologist told us no live vaccines which would include the Flu Mist. He also cautioned us to not let anyone in the family have the flu mist and try to avoid those who have had it recently.

We had a HORRIBLE re-eruption of PANDAS symptoms after FluMist a couple of years ago that took months to wane. I'd never try it again, but every child/every family is different.

Thank you all for your input. I am skipping it. I let them give my 2 year old it because of his asthma. They said his thermerisol free... I am very upset with myself that I did go ahead and let them give my dd the vaccine too.. hers was not thermerisol free (they told me they only had it that way for the under 3's at their office).... they said there was a small trace of it in dd's. She does not exhibit pandas symptoms or other issues but I do hope I didn't do anything harmful to her by giving the go ahead.

I did not give it to my pandas ds yet and am feeling better with my decision not to. Next year I will only be giving it to my child with asthma at the pulmonologists insistence. And I am relieved I didn't end up finding the flu mist like I was trying to for them.

They give regular seasonal flu mist at your school? I freaked out when I realized the 4 year old kindergarteners had to get the remainder of their vaccines by Sept 15. That means my son's class had an influx of kids getting their shots probably along with Flu Mist. When I found out the kids at the bus stop just got FluMist, I swear I felt like they had the plague. I wanted to grab my kids and run the other way and . But I know I can't avoid it. You don't know which kids enter the classroom right after getting it.

What if your a health care worker and have to get the shot could this be dangerous for my son.??
