Chemar
I am not sure if any of you have been following the news stories on the new "Great Depression" in America......... it seems that Depression, OCD and many other mood disorders are on the increase and it is being linked by some to the "Low Carb" trend in diets. Apparantly carbohydrates help to keep seratonin levels elevated, and when there is insufficient carbohydrate in the system, seratonin levels are reduced and the moody stuff increases!! Interesting huh!!
Claire
How weird Chemar, since for yeast they typically recommend reducing carbs for a bit. Well, it makes me feel better, since my son eats a ton of carbs and I haven't tried to change it. My low-carb is reduce 'reduced carb', FYI. And fortunately, I am not moody at all. Ronnas
Intersting, For the last month or so I have been doing a kind of "south Beach" diet and I feel so much better now that I have eliminated alot of carbs (ie. all of the "white" food). Chemar
Hope you are all having a great Easter Sunday.... I am taking a quick break from kitchen duty before my guests arrive. we are definitely low carbing for our meal today......lots of seafood and salads... we have temps in the high 80's here in sunny Florida so we are eating "summery" Claire, I think the reports related to seratonin and carbs are referring to people who are cutting carbs drastically. rather than just sensibly reducing them like you are. Also, Ronna, eliminating the carbs from "refined" foods (ie the white, bleached flours etc) can ONLY be good when we went "whole food" a few years ago. we noticed an immediate improvement in all our family's health, especially in digestion and vitality......so those kind of carbs are sure worth going low on ok.....back to the kitchen.......... Claire
Chemar/Ronna, Yeast/Reduced-Carb I am becoming more convinced that a portion of those who feel better on low/reduced carb is that they had yeast issues, and the low-carb reduces the yeast, and/or they had wheat allergies and Atkin minimizes wheat. The 'new Atkins' method (as opposed to 25 years ago) looks at net carbs (carbs minus fiber) vs carbs, and thus allows quite a bit of fruit and berries. PANDAS/Yeast I am also convinced that some of the problems with PANDAS kids is from the yeast problems from the antibiotics, as well as the protein antibodies attacking healthy brain cells. Then the depressed immune system has more allergy problems. e.g. a Double Whammy effect of the antibodies and the yeast I just left voicemail/email with the NIH on why I never see this covered in their PANDAS discussions. I can't help but wonder if the DAN doctors and the PANDAS researchers share information, and if they do, why we don't see the two topics discussed together. After all, kids with repeated strep have worst PANDAS issues, and it is completely reasonable to think that it is worth investigating if there are yeast problems. I still remember Chemar suggesting yeast issues when my son craved wheat--thanks again! The Braintalk discussion got me thinking more (since my son's first test was negative) and other's success here convinced me to retest. Jennifer's heavy metal discussion was convincing for that element. Sheila gave me the DAN doctor list, which I didn't even know existing (though my son's doctor is also an EM). Talk about taking a village.... Claire ps Ronna, I found a great reduced carb bread (not advertized as reduced). It is Oro-wheat lite Potato bread. It tastes much better to me than the low-carb breads that Whole Foods has. I know that So. Beach is more 'low glycemic' focused, but there are a lot of similarities between it and Atkins. I always eat at the high end of the Atkins carb allowance. Since I get my carbs mostly from veggies, p I get a ton more veggies than my 'normal' eating, which can get pretty 'sugary'. Ronnas
Hi all, Claire, I am with you on the issue of PANDAS. I think there is just so much more to it than just strep. I think the answers are there to be found in our children but nobody is looking closely enough. I have read tons about autism as there is so much to be learned from it. I look forward to the day (our children will be grown) that other parents in the next generation do not have to go through this search for answers... Guest Guest_guest
Hi, Was looking for info on low carb and moodiness. I came across this forum and find it interesting. I have a panic disorder and am on an SSRI for it. When I started the So. Beach Diet, I became so depressed and anxious at the same time. I then heard about the seratonin issue and added some carbs...am doing much better. Thanks for being here!
Chemar
I am so glad you found the Forum and that the info was helpful to you. I heard a discussion on the subject again the other day on CNN and it was fascinating....guess it reinforces that old saying again that even the best things are only good when done in moderation! All the best to you......
