Hi-I'm just wondering if your kids with Pandas have a hard time sitting still during meal time. For some reason my dd is constantly get up or stands at the table. We are constantly telling her to sit down but she seems unable to sit for more than a minute or two before she is off doing something else.

Does anyone else have this problem???

Yup! Its a big problem at school (well, she's at a different school this year and they are better with her) when they are expected to just eat during mealtime, sitting down, at a table. Very early on my daughter had eating issues...the kind that seriously threatened her health, our focus was getting her to eat whenever, wherever, whatever we could. So, at home she pretty much eats little bits continually while she does other things...not conducive to family meal time, but, at least the rest of us can enjoy our meal.

Abosolutely. This was a big one for us. It was a real problem at school and he was the only kid that would work standing up. I bought him a cushion with air in it like they use for kids with vestibular sensory disorders which helped a little. He could stay seated and move around. It is unbelievable now though after PEX. Problem solved. I talked to his teacher yesterday and she said he has not gotten up once. Just 8 weeks ago he could not sit still.

Yes. When my son was in the early stages of recovery, he would last about 5-10 minutes sittign down, then he'd get up, walk around the table, fidget, just stand up by his chair, etc. For the time being I let him do it. I was just happy he was eating. Right now, that fidgeting and restlessness at the table has passed. But he does talk a lot which makes for a long meal. But I think that's just his personality. I'm still getting to know him all over again.

Wow, I love this fourm as I continue to learn stuff about my girls!

DD8 has this problem, she eats standing up most days unless she's watching TV and eating. I do notice when she's feeling best she will sit down at the table more often. I don't make her sit at home but at restaurants I do. The girls used to try to sit under the table so we stopped going for a long time! Now our rule is that they can't go under the table and they have to sit approprately. It's so hard for them! They get around it by making frequent trips to the restroom or finding excuses to get up.

Our daughter also cannot sit still. She is a little better now, but she usually sits up on her feet or knees so that she can bounce while sitting. We always thought that this was a sensory issue. I can no longer remember what she was like before this all started in terms of sitting still <_< , but she was also in a Montessori program which does not require anyone to sit down. I do remember last year, that her teacher commented that she was more jittery at circle time. This year, I warned the teacher, and she seemed fine with Meg standing for part of the time.

That's an interesting question - I don't know much about ADHD symptoms. Megan can focus very well unless her OCD is very high. She can read a book, understand directions, do her math, hear the teacher despite classroom distrations. She just can't sit still. She has been in OT for sensory integration for most of the last year, so she is due for an evalution. It will be interesting to see the results at this point.

Well, yeah....

Um, don't all PANDAS kids have adhd symptoms?

Opening a can of worms here but I think it's worth discussion.

Ds9 never sits still at the dinner table. Can't do it.

I guess it depends on what you call ADHD. It can cover so many symptoms if you look at the 4 types of adhd. My younger dd is impulsive and overreacts but I would not put her in the adhd category, unless I read the symptoms and then I go, Hmmmmmm????? Older dd has more typical adhd symptoms.

Well, I tend to catagorize my son's hyperactivity during a PANDAS episode to ADHD, but when I compare him to children who have ADHD, but no PANDAS, it is different. He still has times when he is hyper or doesn't want to focus, but now I think it is the 5 year old in him that's the culprit.

He's been reviewed by a psychiatrist and 2 psychologists. None diagnosed him with ADHD.

Our dd has also never received an ADHD diagnosis. She did receive some extensive psychologial/educational testing Nov. 08 so I think they would have mentioned that if she had it. They did notice some motions while sitting at school and it was attributed to sensory issues.

When my son is in a PANDAS episde he can not sit still - won't even cuddle on the couch with me. The last time he saw his pediatrician I wanted antiboitics because I was seeing a flare up of symptoms. She refused, stated that his fidgiting looked more like ADHD to her and that until he saw a phyciatrist she would not give us any more antibiotics. Thankful I was able to find a phyciatrist with PANDAS experience who has cleared him of either an ADHD or Anxiety disorder. My son is allergic to so many antibiotics it is very hard to get a doctor to perscribe them as they don't have many they can use and they are afraid he will become allergic to those as well.

That reminds me that my son went for screenings with the OT in Early Childhood in the school district. She did find slight sensory issues that was not within the average range in some areas, but nothing over the top that warranted therapy. They said that's common with speech issues (which he has). But, again, no ADHD was mentioned.
