EAMom
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,161719,00.html I'll post this link on the PANDAS forum as well. From the article: In this study, published in the July issue of the journal Pediatrics, Davis and colleagues reviewed the medical records of 144 children diagnosed with OCD, Tourette’s, or a separate tic disorder. They also reviewed the records of a larger group of children without the conditions. They found that children with one of the neurological disorders were twice as likely to have had a strep infection in the three months before diagnosis. The association was even stronger for kids who had more than one strep infection. Children who had multiple strep infections over the course of a year had a 13-fold increase in risk for Tourette’s. Chemar
again my question would be were these classified with "Tourette" possibly misdx when in fact they have PANDAS related tics rather than actual TS? as far as we know my son has never ever had strep. EAMom
As far as I can tell, these were regular kids presenting with OCD, TS, or tics for the first time. It is certainly likely there were some PANDAS kids in the mix (depending on how common you believe PANDAS to be). Here's a link to the full article in Pediatrics http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/...t/full/116/1/56 Until last March 08, I had also thought that my kids never got strep...no doc had ever done a throat culture since (I assume) my kids don't get a "classic" red sore throat with strep. In reality, they should have been cultured many times (when they've had fever, vomiting, no cough, other symptoms of strep), but hadn't, and I didn't know to ask for it. Now that I know about strep/PANDAS, my youngest (non-pandas) has been positive 3x in the past year (she has no symptoms, except behavior change in her sister). My PANDAS dd was culture positive in March 08 when we learned of PANDAS and insisted on the culture (FEVER and likely strep infection was Jan 08). We haven't cultured her as regularly since she has been on prophylactic abs.
Chemar
we had throat cultures done as well as the blood titres all negative we had the throat cultures when my oldest had strep and when sore throats the pediatrician did them routinely as in Florida there is a lot of strep at school the titres were done under dr Murphy at Shands after his explosive onset of tics/OCD she also did throat cultures then
