lismom Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 Hello, I am new to this forum and to TS. My son is 11 and just started having mild facial tics and sniffling. My neurologists appt. isn't for another month so I thought I would try supplements in the mean time. There is so much information out there, sometimes too much. I have just started, magnesium, multi vit, vit c. This has only been for 2 or 3 days. I am going to try Kavinace as well. I have two questions. Has anyone had luck with Kavinace and do supplements take weeks or more? Also has anyone seen the tics get worse with antibiotics. Thank you, Lismom
ilovedogs Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi there! Just wanted to chime in about the Kavinace. It didn't help my son's tics. It helped his OCD anxiety. For the tics, we use vitamin B6 and magnesium primarily and glycine. We are in a waxing phase right now with his eye winking tic(which has been the predominant tic for him) so I'll be calling our natural doctor to see if he has any other suggestions. My ds started ticcing the day after he turned 9. We've mostly seen eye blinking, eye winking, jaw stretching, hair tossing, finger smelling(more of an OCD thing), and now he says he has a breathing tic which I have yet to witness. Anyway, they've mostly been mild and he's only had mild pain from the jaw tic so we're hanging in there and have not taken him to a neurologist for a diagnosis nor have we considered meds. I'm sure you'll get other responses here. Bonnie
Tracey111 Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi, I have used magnesium taurate (Cardiovascular Research Brand), calcium citrate, ester C, organic flax see oil, Gaba, NAC, and acetyl L carnitine.....the last three are what I found most effective. (I researched each one to determine the amounts.) When I get lazy on giving him these supplements, I start to see tics. Preservatives and artificials are really bad for my son....hot dogs set him off for some reason! I hope this information helps. Tracey
Chemar Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 do supplements take weeks or more? Also has anyone seen the tics get worse with antibiotics. Thank you, Lismom hi and welcome for some, especially when real deficient in them, the supps can work really quickly but others may take 3-6 weeks to see a notable effect. antibiotics kill off the "good" microbes as well as the bad and so if taken without restoring the good, candida albicans ("yeast") fungal overgrowth can occur and that is a BIG tic trigger

Is taurine the same thing as taurate? The kavinace I just started is made up of taurine, mag. and gaba I believe. I bought acetyl L carnitine, how much do you give? My son is 90lbs. At this time I am trying to remain cautiously optomistic. Kathy.
Chemar Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 we never used acetyl L carnitine only regular L carnitine at 500mg per day taurine and taurate are the same amino acid...taurate is usually the compounded form as in magnesium plus taurine=magnesium taurate

Atleast that is what the pharmacist told me.
