do your kids tic constantly

Hello

I was wondering how often your kids tic. My ds seems to not stop at all...He is contanttly moving and doing one thing or another... I don't thnk we really ever see a wanning period, except when he is sleeping. We just ordered Bonnie's supplements...hoping that helps somewhat. Really don't want to go to perscriptions but we are really at the end of our ropes. He is having a toiugh time in school with peers and teasing, just started to go to the intermediate school and was sepaated in groups from his close friends. He is such a seeet and loving little boy...and willing to try anything he can. Neither myself or my husband familiea have any cases of TS... we both have a member or two that have small ticcing, nothing as disruptive as my sons. We just keep hoping that one day he will outgrow it. We give him a b complex, grape seed extract and kids calm. We are back and forth ont he fish oil or flax seed... not sure if it is helping or not.

Thanks

mary

Hi Mary,

My son seems to tic all the time too, but we have seen times when his does not tic, just not often. His head and eye tics are all gone, but we will be checking ater the othro. apt. in 2 weeks. Last time he was at the ortho was Aug. so don't know if that is why he has slowed.

His vocal tics are the ones that seem to never go away. Winter is a little better though.

Yes, Mary, my son seems to tic a lot when he is waning. But, he's never had a tic free day in a year. So, in other words, he tics daily but it's ALL THE TIME when he's waxing. When he's waning he tics but they are very small and minor tics yet I still see them at least every few minutes. He's been waning lately b/c we had a stomach virus last week and it really triggered his neck muscle ticcing. I'm hoping that clears up soon b/c he complains about that one the most! I'm not sure if I answered your question but I figured I'd let you know our experience anyway!

for my son with TS, waning only means less frequency and intensity of tics, not tic free. The only time he doesnt tic is when asleep or when playing his musical instruments and other things that have him totally absorbed and focussed

re fish oil and flaxseed oil.....the fish one definitely causes my son to tic more whereas flaxseed really helps in many areas for him

hope the BonTech supps prove helpful

my ds does tics daily, although it's not all the time during the day. I notice it most in the evening when he's watching a show or when he's concentrating on his homework.

he was on fish oil for a while and I noticed a decrease in his tics for about 2 months. But, after that his tics escalated, so I took him off and noticed a dramatic difference without the fish oil.

We started kids calm about a month ago and that helps A LOT!

Thanks everyone, Yesterday was a really tough day... he was just none stop.. He usually is not as bad in Church but when we went last night, usually go on Sunday mornings...but it was going to be a late night and we wanted them to be able to sleep in...he was just constantly moving his head and shoulders...i would just put my arms around him and try to hold him from moving so much... we then went to my sisters for her bday and we were around a whold new group of people... and i could just see everyone watching him...constantly ticcing. I felt so sick in the stomach... I told my husband today I just don't see it ever stopping. Then i did read an article saying the 10 year is the hardest year for kids who start around 5-8...which he did.. I noticed the big ones starting in about 2nd grade... Well he turns 11 in February and this has been the worse year yet so hopefully there will be some light.

He is with his dad fishing today... when they left my husband said the good old fresh air and a few fish will help...

I did stop his fishoil/flax seed again...just not sure if that is a cause or not... Hopefully bonnies mixture will take with him.

Again, you are all so great... i really don't think i would be able to hold my sanity without this forum. My family is great but NO ONE has any experience with this at all and most just don't understand. I have a sil who knows he can't help it and almost everytime she sees him and he does his flinging his arms up she always does it back and says WHAT.. .it drives me nuts...

Just wanted to say that I added magnesium sulfate cream (epsom salts in a cream base) to my son's regimen about 3 weeks ago and the decrease in his tics have been dramatic. Now, I may see only 3 or 4 a day -- and just one instance of it, like one eye roll, or one head nod. I give him a scoop morning and evening, in addition to Bonnie's supplements, flax oil, coenzyme Q 10, and methyl b-12.

I get the cream online from kirkman labs.

I know that it could just be a waning period, but it really times out with the cream. I also had his DNASe level tested, and it is down to 380 from a high of 680. (680 in March, 380 last week. I wish I had tested it in between, but he was terrified of the blood draw and so I didn't force the issue. So, maybe that's the reason -- but I'm continuing to use the cream, as the timing just seems so spot on.

Also, we go to see a metabolic specialist this week for the first time. I will post if there is any news from that end. Does anyone have any advice as to what to ask her?

Thanks!

Hi Liane

yes the epsom cream (we make our own) and baths do bring a real noticeable calming of tics dont they

I know we had a thread running before on how rubbing the cream on or near the area where the tics are occurring seems to also be beneficial

Thanks, Chemar. I think I got the idea from you earlier in the summer.

I found the baths didn't help too much -- we have an extra deep bathtub and perhaps the salts were too diluted. And everytime I tried to make my own, it was a royal mess! (If you could post your recipe, maybe I'd try again, but I wasn't too successful the few times I tried!)

If it's really the cream working, then I am so incredibly grateful. Basically, I'd pretty much say he's essentially tic-free now and has been for a few weeks. I had all these metabolic tests done in the last couple of weeks, and the only one that showed an abnormality was the DNASE, which continues to be high, although lower than before. I don't really think he's PANDAS, though -- he had one confirmed strep and that was not coincidental with a tic onset -- the strep occurred a year after the onset, and there wasn't an upsurge around the infection time. But I'm still pursuing that route, too, as the DNASE has me concerned.

One reason I think maybe it's PANDAS/immune-related, though, was the most recent wax started in mid-January and he had a tooth extraction in very late December. I want to explore that, so that I can ask for prophylactic antibiotics for future dental work.

Thoughts? Does anyone else get prophylactic antibiotics for dental work? And if so, who prescribes them -- the dentist or the MD?

Thanks!

i tried to make my own cream once, but it got so runny... must have done something wrong... i will have to check out kirkman labs and see what they have... i know he would rather have lotion rubbed on than sitting in the tub. I see they have detox pills too. we did the tea that was mentioned here, but didn't have any change from it. Does anyone else have any luck with such pills.

Funny thing, as I said earlier my son had a really bad day on Saturday and went fishing with his dad on Sunday and got sick on the way home and a few more times that night...wonder if the onset of the flu caused him to do so badly on Saturday???

I got my recipe from mrsD  It's best when made regularly in these smaller batches rather than big batch stored

any cream that wont cause water to "settle out" will do. I get a calendula based one at my health store

Mix some epsom salts(about a tablespoonful) into warm water on a plate, use as little water as possible, then mix it into a cream of your choice. .
