Couple questions here......

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Looking for some input here... first, could the feel of eyeglasses on a childs face cause facial tics? It seems when my older son has his glassas on (which he just got about 2 months ago) he gets a mild facil tic involving one side of his face...I have not seen it yet when his glassas are off.

Second...could a child have an abdominal tic, or some kind of tic inside the belly that causes a bit of regurgitation of food? I know of the possibility of acid reflux..but he says this doesn't burn or taste sour...and it does not always occur after eating etc. He does it mostly, (although not always) in the bathtub. ANY thoughts on what could cause this besides acid reflux would be appreciated. Any digestive issues, yeast, parasites, illness, etc ??????

THANKS!!

P.mom,

When you say tic, do you mean he constantly does it, or could it just be a "habit" and not necessarily the tic that is the urge that can't be helped? For instance, I myself have a habit of wanting to look out the side of my sunglasses when I have them on. I do this all the time, like I want to see beyond the side rim of the glasses and so I do this when i feel like it, but I don't necessarily feel it is a tic, like the urge that I have to relieve, its more like an annoying habit that I want to do, and yes, it is because of the feeling of having dark glasses on and wanting to look out from them, but only off to the left side, because that just feels more natural.

Sorry I can't help with the second question, but about the sunglasses - yes, I think anything that stimulates the senses (is felt, heard, smelt, etc.) has the potential to trigger tics, although I can't say whether or not your son has a tic due to the sunglasses as only he knows what the movements feel like.

I hope this helps

Thanks Guys...no, it is a tic...it is not with his eyes looking anywhere...the right side of his face will will kind of crunch up as his one eye shuts...kind of like you are giving someone a hard wink that involves the whole side of your face.

yes, my son gets tics triggered by sensations.

it is the reason he cuts all labels out of clothing to prevent neck irritation and wears socks inside out cos of the seams irritating

i have long noticed a link between his sensory integration issues and his tics and that other thread where we were discussing the "tic where it is felt" indicates to me this is a common observation

re why the abdominal tic in the tub I dont have an answer, but my son has had gagging tics that sometimes caused slight regurtitation

My son has recently had a blinking tic and I had begun wondering if his glasses made it worse also. He would be ok in the morning-not great and then he would put on his glasses and things seemed to increase. I know he has light sensitivity so I would make him wear his glasses outside always as I felt light increased it and his glasses went dark. So I just couldn't figure out the answer. I know my husband who has minor tics has a neck stretching tic that happens when he wears a tie. Something about it being around his neck sets it off. Perhaps the relaxation of the bath sets of the stomach one or the position of his body. Hope that helps.

I have always had trouble figuring out what was tics, ocd or sensory thing. I decided it didn't matter what issue it was evloving from, its still a part that comes with her ts. The glasses could be a sensory issue. To suddenly have something sitting on the face could really bother him, which in turn makes him tic. My dd has had issues with how things feel since she was 4. It's quite a battle. We spend a lot of money between clothes, socks and shoes. What felt ok at the store may feel different at home. My friend loves the un-used hand me downs for her girls  . Everything has to be just right, she needs to jump up do some tics prior to deciding if she can wear it. She explains like, "it doesn't feel right" and of course the anxiety of this makes her tic more. Be thankful he doesn't insist on not wearing them. How long has he had them? Perhaps over time he will adjust to the sensation of them and the facial tics will leave. Good luck!

God Bless,

Tonia
