Claire
Jennifer re Neurotherapy, Sorry, I just saw your post tonight--somehow I didn't get or see the email notification on this thread! The best discussion on neurotherapy I found is here: http://www.brianothmerfoundation.org/emerg...ingfrontier.htm Basically, they use non-invasive sensors attached temporarily to the scalp to register the frequency of brain waves, which are visually displayed on a computer screen pictorally in a sort of low-tech looking computer game. The patient is rewarded with points to keep the frequencies in a certain range (dif. ranges for dif parts of the brain). ie playing computer with no hands. The child after a time finds the 'calm spot' in his or her brain, or the ideal place to function. The idea is that they then take this skill to their normal lives. e.g. for tics/ocd/anxiety etc...their brain starts to function more optimally. It is fairly accepted by the medical community for epilepsy, gaining much acceptance in some areas for ADD, and the TS/OCD successes are still more anecdotal and haven't been as well documented--it is a newer area of focus. Claire
Jennifer, One more--mostly anecdotal. Search for Tourette's--I think it is page 19. http://www.marksteinberg.com/writings/unre...chablechild.pdf
Chemar
Claire I know you have mentioned that your son has a problem swallowing pills. There have been success reports in getting kids to swallow the pills by taking a drink thru a straw! Dont know why it works, but it seems to. May be a way to get flaxseed oil capsules in for your son.
Claire
Thanks Chemar! I will try it sometime. I was in a bind thinking of how to get him 5HTP and the St. John's Wort also. Only so much I can stick in a smoothie. Gloria
Guest Jean
Dera Claire, I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner to your question-just noticed your post today. We are using a special blend of flax seed and sunflower oil that has a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. You here a lot of talk of omega 3's, but this particular reasearch I came across from Dr. Patricia Kane, who has been researching fatty acids for about 20 years, states that in a case of heavy metal toxicity (which seems to be the case with neurological issues) the omega 6's are depressed, so introducing omega 3's before stabilizing the 6's actually does more damage than good. We had our son on fish oil for a while, but didn't notice a difference. Within 2 weeks of useing this oil his tics completely vanished and we are going on 3 months!!!! The first break in about 5 years. I also read the same ratio concept in a book called "Fatty Acids that Kill-Fatty Acids that Heal". The ratio in our organs is 4:1 so the author says we should ideally try to supplement that sort of ratio-it takes the body longer to convert the 6's than it does the 3's. Dr.Kane has a company by the name of Body Bio make the oil. It is completely organic, cold pressed...in fact it will only last for 6 weeks, but you can freeze the portion you think you may not use up in that time. Their website www.bodybio.com you can request an information packet which I found to be AWESOME!!! Lot's of really good information- it even includes the story of an autistic boy, the lab findings and treatment. They were able to completely reverse his autism, just by coerrecting the imbalances in his body (this is not the first time I've heard of this). As far as the detoxification protocol went, we used some homeopathic drops for heavy metals, but are now using a very pure form of chlorella (Body Bio has this too). They are about the size of mini m&m's and our eight year old can swallow them just fine. We do this along with high amounts of Vit.C. I had heard a lot of wonderful things about chlorella before, but did't know how I could get him to take seaweed- this is a child friendly form(if they can swallow pills). Chlorella has the capability to penetrate the cell wall and has a very strong affinity for all toxins, not just heavy metals. Because of it's strong binding capabilities to toxins it is safely excereted out of the body. www.mercola.com is a wonderful health website. You can sign up for weekly e-newsletters as well as search Dr.Mercola's sight for just about anything. He has a large research staff. I learned a lot of valuable info. from his newsletters Hope answerd your questions let me know how things go. Best of Luck, Jennifer Hi Jennifier, I was wondering where that I could get the flax seed oil with the omega6/omega3 ratio 4:1. My son who is 7 now and started his tics about 3 months ago. I just started to give him the flax seed oil bought from whole food market. I noticed that the ratio is approx. 3:1. Is it a good one? Thanks for the information! Guest Robin O
Jennifer- I have been giving my son the oil by Body Bio for 1 week now. He seems to be very moody lately. Did you notice this with your son. Did you continue to give you son the fish oil and the Body Bio oil together or just the body bio oil. My son is doing very good with taking the oil but his moods swings are terrible and his tics have acturally increased this past week. Any suggestions?? Guest Guest_efgh
Jennifer, an important clarification. Any quick test to find out if the flax oil has turned rancid or not? I just bought a fresh bottle last week but some how I feel that it tastes a bit more sour than my previous bottle though the brand, make etc are the same. I do not want to take chances but yet would be interested to know if there is a simple method by which I can figure out the rancidity ??
Guest Guest_efgh
Chemar, some time back you were mentioning about Epsom salt and warm baths for better sleep, etc. Can you educate me more on that. Do we get that salt in packets. Epsom is magnesium suplhate, right and is it that property that helps in general. Want to try it out soon.
Chemar
I buy the Epsom salts in large tubs at the supermarket. It has long been known to help muscular aches and strains etc. perhaps it is that relaxant effect that helps soothe a person with tics before bed. Guest Jennifer
Robin, We at this point are just giving our son the body bio oil, no fish oil yet. I didn't notice any moodiness or worsening of tics with the oil-we have, however, been detoxing and using supplements for a year and a half now though, the oil is the last thing we incorporated. I must say that when we first started the natural approach he actually got worse. It's a tough situation because the nervous system can act up when exposed to harmful substances or even to good things because it is actually trying to straighten things out. Dr. McCandless has said that it is very common for tics to get worse any time a new suplement is introduced. Tics are not necessarily always "bad". I'm certainly not a doctor and if you're worried you may want to ask your doctor. Fatty acids are also known to detoxify- It could be a cleansing response. If you're worried you may want to stop the oil for a few days and see what happens and possibly start again at a very small amount. like 1/2 tsp. and gradually increase. Hope this helps, Jennifer
Guest Jennifer
Chemar and efgh, Another good thing about epsom salt baths is that they help draw out toxins from the body through the skin. Jennifer
Guest Jennifer
Jean, The cpmpany I get the oil from is Body Bio, their number is 1-888-320-8338. You can ask them for a free information packet- it's awsome!! Jennifer
Guest Jean
Jennifier, Thank you so much for your kindly response! I certainly will call them! My son started his tics about 3 months ago. He is just having TICS (per his doctor). I feel heart break when I see him doing it. I found out that people in this place are very nice to help each other. Thanks all for sharing the information! J
Guest Guest_efgh
Chemar and Jennifer Thanks for the info on epsom salts. Just curious to find out if all your kids have "maximum tics" while watching TV or is that even case-dependent? It startles me some time to see my son almost tic free till the time we switch on the TV and once he starts watching bouts of tics start off! Jennifer, have you started off with 5 HTP for your son yet and did it help? Also I had asked in one of the posts if you would please share the vitamin/supplement regimen that you use for your son. Jean, What are the tics that your son is having and did it suddenly start? Does he have motor and vocal too?? Does any one else have tics in your family? Does flax oil help his tics. Claire, Hope your son is doing fine now. Did not hear from you for quite some time. Though most of the experienced people in this forum may not be doctors, I should applaud about one fact that all are so HELPFUL and KNOWLEDGEABLE. After all, experience is the best teacher and good that all in the forum have the willingness to share their knowledge/experiences!!!
