Hard to breathe or the need to take deep breaths?

Recommended Posts

A few of you have mentioned your child have the need to take deep breaths or can't seem to get enough air in. I am wondering if this is a tic?

Because my daughter has been complaining about not able to get deep breaths, as a result she would breath thru her nose and let out a "ha" sound thru the mouth. I had her check for asthma, and the dr. said she is fine. No problem there. I am puzzle and am a little concerned.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

My son had this tic when he was 5 before we knew anything about tics. But I remember it was in the spring and somehow I instinctively knew it was a "habit" and didn't really worry about it. It went away after about a month. I wonder though if it has anything to do with seasonal allergies. When I think back he always had these habits in the spring at 4,5,6 and now 7 yrs. old.

Patty,

I also remember he did this mainly at his tennis lessons, so he was outside, which makes me think about pollen etc. Also, I could tell he was breathing fine and feeling fine - it was just a habit. How old is your daughter - if she is older she's probably more aware of her tic and therefore it bothers her. My son was only 5 at the time.

I think it is sort of a tic/compulsion (the compulsion being the feeling of not being able to fully inflate your lungs enough, so you keep trying). I am positive "I" did this as a pre-teen, I remember it distinctly. Don't think it lasted too long tho.

Hi Faith,

I agree that it may be more of a compulsion than a tic. She started that about 6 mos. ago. Lasted about 2/3 months then went away for a couple of mos. and now is back. Also, about a year ago, she had a fear of stepping on pesticide after over hearing a friend of mine said it is toxic and kids should not walk on it when it is fresh. It took her a good three mos. to get over it and after much convincing.

I am hoping this is a normal developmental process that she will outgrow.

Tom's mom,

I kind of thought it might be allergy related too, but not sure. Thx for your input.

My youngest started that last year (deep breaths through her nose, would not want to breath through her mouth) when she was 10. I have heard her do that again now that she is 11, but does the same as your child, Patty, it goes away.

Interesting you would remember that at pre-teen, Faith, as she did not start until about late in her 10th year.
