myrose Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I have been gathering all the things I was asked to bring with us to the NEW Doctor (so excited) I was wondering if anyone might have an idea as to what and why she would want these? Just curious as to your views. I was asked to NOT FORGET! 3 things: Her height and weght charting Her diagnosis of tic disorder Her shot record I was also told to have my questions prepared ahead of time so I will not forget any. One thing I am debating on whether I should bring up or not is this: My daughter was put on Amoxicillin (first time ever on antibiotics) for a strep throat that had no symptoms what so ever. I asked the test be performed and though they were reluctant because there were no symptoms, they went ahead and did the swab anyhow. It came back positive of course! Funny how I look back now and remember her always ocmplaining of a sore throat. Anyhow she was also precribed Nasonex for her stuffed up nose that we deal with almost on a daily basis as well. After she started both of the prescriptions her tics disappeared. Then shortly after (I think it was almost 6 days or something) she got red dot liek things all over and when we took her back in, the doctor said it looked like a reaction to the amoxicillin and took her off. We then started a course (3-day) of azithromaz in which did NOTHING for tics. Thet came right back. I guess my question is before I walk in there and report this....is there a difference in antibiotics??? As far as the ingredients in each? Funny how now with this severe increase in tics...her chronic stuffed up nose is gone. REALLY REALLY weird! Her nose is never clear and she has never had such an increase in tics either. Still could be the pool....I have told her the pool filter needs some work so I can just see if in a couple days the tics calm down. This would then help me decide if indeed its the chlorine would't it??? I try so hard to stick to one question and subjest all the time but it never works! Sorry....
Chemar Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 ((((((((myrose))))))))) as these things occur to you, write a one liner on your list of things you want to ask, then before you go put them in the order you feel is most important. Take that list with you when you go to the Doc and even if you just quickly read it to her, it may give her vital clues to help your daughter all these are pieces of the puzzle, and hopefully your observations will help the Doc to help your daughter.
peglem Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I would absolutely tell the doctor about it-both the amoxicillan and the nasonex. And yes there is a difference in how antibiotics work. They are classified according to their "modus operandi" (how they eliminate bacteria) and according to which bugs they are most effective against.
kim Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 myrose, she got red dot liek things all over and when we took her back in, the doctor said it looked like a reaction to the amoxicillin and took her off. Can you determine from these links if those dots were Petechiaes? I don't know how long that condition takes to clear up. Did it start to get better when you discontinued the amox? I'm wondering what kind of Dr. this is. I'm sure it's in one of your posts, but I was told a new Dr. "really only needs their vax records." by old office when transferring to a new one. Like that was all in their medical history that was really important. I hope your new Dr. is looking for something else there. This may be totally outta left field, but when reading sulfur info, I came across something that said that amox contains sulfur. Not sure if that means anything or not, but thought I would mention it. Image http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...I7DMUS%26sa%3DN Petechiae http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&saf...iae&spell=1 Petechiae on soft palate............I thought those red dots were just part of the strep. Now I'm wondering if others see those dots when their kids have strep? http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...I7DMUS%26sa%3DN
myrose Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 Kim....The red dots were all over her body. Didn't see any in her mouth like the last pic. They went away a few days after stopping the amoxicillin. Could have been 3 days, all I know for sure is that they went away. Just don't understand why the reaction took so long to take place???? On the doctor..Her name is Cornelia Franz. She didn't want her medical records like they did when we switched pediatricians. Just those two things along with a copy of her diagnosis. Guess I will soon find out. Thanks so much for replying

myrose Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 Kim...did you state you thought it contains sulfur?? Wonder what Carolyn N would have to say to this. I have been searching but have not found anything yet as far as sulfur and amoxicillin.
kim Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 myrose, I just saw a heading like this. Again, probably not a significant amt. just caught my eye. [PDF] SULFONAMIDE CROSS-REACTIONS EXPLAINED File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - View as HTML Many medications contain sulfur but are not sulfonamides, e.g., amoxicillin,. captopril, omeprazole, spironolactone, sulfates and sulfites. ... Don't mean to a pain regarding the petachias, but it can occur anywhere i believe. Most of the google image pics look like extreme cases. I didn't realize the one I posted was the result of chemo. Her is a pic of an individual dot from wiki I have seen those dots on the throat. I still don't know if there is any real significance. I don't think it's real uncommon (especially in throat?) but wondering if it is a sign of something else with our kids? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petechia from list here Childhood protein-energy malnutrition ?????
dut Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Hello Our daughter was on amoxicillin for 14 days (for strep/PANDAS). On day 10 she developed what looked like hives on her trunk, upper legs and inside top of arms. When the lumps went down they left red blotches which hives don't do normally .. well not on her anyway. Having researched it and speaking to our ped it could have been an allergic reaction but can also be something called a toxic rash. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/517335_2 I read somewhere, but can't find it now, that if it's a toxic rash it may not necessarily happen next time which may be important if your child needs penicillin in the future. You can get tested to rule out allergy I believe. Don't trust me on the future use bit.. check it out with your doctor but may be an important differentiation...
Caryn Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 In our search for gluten free and corn free meds I discovered that amoxicillin is gluten free but contains corn. We went with amoxil name brand in lieu of the generic and our son was fine. May be totally unrelated, but thought I would throw that out there.
