myrose
I am back to normal tonight with my reading/research. I posted earlier on how after stopping the intrakid my daughters tics icreased like never before and they were almost all new ones. I could not figure out why this happened aside from her being in the pool almost daily again. Then while sitting here tonight and racking my brain, looking back through our journal, something hit me. I am not sure if or why this would cause these new tics and the increased severity but my daughter gets melatonin everynight before bed (always has) 1.5mg I was just about to run out so I went online to order as I usually do and I happened to be on the kirklands website and saw that they also carried melatonin. They also have a melatonin tab with added magnesium of 100mg. I thought this would be great! The intrakid has 60mg and goin by her weight and age the total of 160mg was exactly what was recommended for her. I know that some of you use more but this is just the recommended dose. We were not taking the intrakid after the big spill anyhow. I started my daughter on this melatonin/mag combo the day we received it. Just to add that there was only 1mg of melatonin in these and it did not do anything for my daughter at all as far as helping her fall to sleep. Her usual dose works wonders though (1.5mg) I found it weird actually because the magnesium is supposed to relax as well. Anyhow it was the day after starting these that the weird increase started. It was the only supplement being taken aside from a few enzymes and probiotics. How could this cause an increase in tics not to mention they are also all new. I am completely puzzled on this and did NOT give her her melatonin/mag combo tonight. If she is different tomorrow then I will know it was the pills from kirkmans. Anyone have any ideas???? Thanks so much everyone

Thanks so much everyone Hey Wendy, did you find anything out about this yet? The only supplements I'm giving now are kids calm at night: 1 tsp He gets a cal/mag supplement that has Zinc and Vitamin D(it's called Floradix) and he gets GABA, 100 mg sublingual. And, I give him a probiotic and put flaxseed oil in a smoothie daily for him. I'm looking to get him on some other supplements but right now his tics wax and wane daily. Some days I see nothing until the evening, other days it starts in the AM and is on and off, and other days it's full on ticcing all day long. I still don't see a pattern nor can I tell(by reading my journal) if it's a food trigger/allergen/supplement/environment thing?! It's driving me crazy! faith
myrose, okay, when I read your post yesterday about spilling the intrakid, I noted the part about not giving the melatonin, and that was my first idea. So since you are saying (if I got it correctly) that the big increase in tics came a bit after stopping intakid, but you ALSO replaced her usual melatonin with this lower dosed one from Kirkmans? Was there any time that you didn't give the melatonin at all since the spill? But I see you say that the big increase has declined and she is back to just the foot stomp? I wouldn't mind hearing that again to get it straight. Now I don't have any experience with melatonin, but I think it is a hormone? I would look a little further into what that does, and I'll just attach what the description is from the Kirkman's site. It's interesting that it says somehting about "melatonin being important in the production of glutathione", which we kind of know is sort of the last step in the detox path? http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/specia...00_Spec037.html "Poor methylators do not efficiently make melatonin from seratonin. This can hinder P5P formation from Vitamin B6, which in turn leads to a shortfall of this important nutrient. For this reason, we recommend that everyone who uses Super Nu-thera or Thera-Response also use melatonin in the evening to determine if it provides added benefit in addition to sleep". This bit makes me wonder if that could be so for your daughter, as I'm betting the Intrakid did contain P5P (the bioavailable form of B6) as opposed to B6? SO, maybe by not getting the P5P from the intrakid formula AND/OR "NOT" getting the melatonin (or less of it) kind of messed up this part of the path, and apparently is an important part for her? (I think what they mean about the Super nu-thera is that it contains regular B6 and not P5P? I have a bottle here from a ways back of the "Hypo-allergenic" form of Super Nu-thera and it contains 50 mgs. of "P5P, not B6). So if she IS a poor methylator (and my feeling is they all are to a degree) then maybe the B6 is not getting converted properly? I could be wrong, but I think B6 has been noted to make some kids hyper, and that is why Kirkman has replaced some formulas with the P5P? This is totally MY take on it, I could be all wet on this, but who knows? If anyone else understands this part of it, please ring in. Chemar
we found that even subtle changes in the supplements that were working for my son could have dramatic changes in his tics/OCD I think our systems struggle to adapt when we keep changing things whether the actual supps or their doses Because bichemical pathways involve so many interrelationships, by altering what we take in, we alter those pathways, sometimes with dramatic effect one of the reasons it is so much better to have a qualified person advising on supplements, especially when a developing child is involved. just because something works for one person doesnt mean it is beneficial for all so we really do need to be careful JMHO
