Chemar
as many of you know I help administer the NeuroTalk forum we have a separate forum there for "Health News Headlines" http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum66.html it seems every day there are more reports of a "genetic link" to almost everything....today even a predisposition to cigarette addiction as well as to susceptibility for lung cancer......... I have been chatting with Kim re her Genetics thread, and have confessed to her that I simply dont understand all the technical talk in the articles and quotes, but i just really believe that genetics play a vital role in most everything we discuss here..whether how a kid will react to the vaccines, or the food allergies they manifest, their susceptibility to PANDAS from strep infection, the manifestation of TS, etc etc etc I know that environmental factors play a HUGE role in it all, but at the root....it really does seem to me that it is in the genetic makeup that the answers (and eventual most effective treatments) will be found anyway...."genetics" really is at the forefront of so much news on so many illnesses and now even "habits" ....... that I just wanted to say a BIG thanks to Kim for wading thru all that stuff that many of us dont even begin to understand and making it available here. Who knows which researchers may read here and may find clues toward cures!!
kim
Cheri, I feel almost comatose today. I stayed up waaaay too late last nite. I just had to take a minute though to send a hug to Cheri...Our Glial Cell Notwithstanding, glial cells are imperative for the proper function of neurons since it is through them that support, insulation and nutrition are adequately provided. Perhaps the most familiar example of a glial cell is the myelin sheath, a fatty substance that wraps around neuron axons to facilitate signal transduction. Other types of glia include astrocytes, Schwann cells, satellite cells and radial glia. Glial cells provide support and protection for neurons, the other main type of cell in the nervous system. They are thus known as the "glue" of the nervous system. The four main functions of glial cells are to surround neurons and hold them in place, to supply nutrients and oxygen to neurons, to insulate one neuron from another, and to destroy pathogens and remove dead neurons. from one of the neurons
ilovedogs
I have to say that I agree about genetics and even how they can shape our 'habits' such as cigarette smoking or alcohol consumption or overeating. I remember studying in college and learning about oral fixations. I always wondered why I chewed my pencils, or sucked on my hair(way back in 2nd grade), or smoked. I was always putting something in my mouth(no nasty thoughts here, please!! ). Anyway, my dad is a cigarette addict, heavy drinker, etc. So, when I realized I was heading down the same path in college, I changed my 'habits'. I guess what I'm getting at here is that habits can be changed or worked with. Obviously, neurological issues have to be healed from within the body at a cellular level. And, sometimes, no matter what we do can take away that genetic link that exists in all of us. We can only work with what God gave us whether that predisposes us to cancer or to diabetes or to a neurological condition. I'm also curious as to what we CAN do to overcome(not change) our genetics. Can we make things better for ourselves and our children by boosting immune levels, by supplementing amino acids, etc? How much of a difference will these things make if we are predisposed to certain conditions? So, I know I'm asking questions that seem simple but quite frankly, I'm constantly confused by these tics and by the situation as a whole. I almost wish my son had PANDAS so at least I'd have a place to start!
Chemar
((((Kim)))) you are a real gift to this group! ilovedogs, I have been thinking that so much lately too.....with us being proactive and aiming to supplement the deficiencies, eliminate the allergens, eradicate and detoxify from the microbes (bacterial, viral and fungal and who knows which others I am beginning to wonder...the vaccines have microbes in too! ) and the heavy metals and other "loads" on the immune systems and digestive system........all this stuff we do and see good results on.....could this maybe begin the path to genetic healing too for the future generations? Will our children's kids or at least their grandkids be at less of a disadvantage in the susceptibility being encoded into their genes because those things that may aggravate the condition(s) have been corrected? P_Mom
Cheri...I believe what you suggested is true and possible...God created a perfect body...over time, we are the ones who have screwed it up!
Chemar
and now a study that shows resilience to stress, and therefore lower anxiety levels, is also gentically inherited http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/04/04/ge...iency/2118.html
