Inherited TS

Hi All.

I just wanted to know how inherited TS manifests itself. Did anyones come on suddenly, without warning like PANDAS does?

When PANDAS happens, it is so abrupt, without any earlier signs, and the tics are complex, explosive, with ocd and behavioral issues mixed in all of the sudden. Did anyones inherited TS manifest like that? Or does the inherited kind come on kinda slower, with mild tics starting, then becoming more complex, etc. with time?

Thanks!!

Kelly

Hi Kelly

honestly I think it is a variable situation

now that we know the TS link in my husband's family, and looking back, we realize that our son had tics from when he was real tiny...we just didnt know what they were.

when he had eye blinking/rolling aged 5, it was dx as related to his vision problems. He was dx with ADD and SID at that time too

his squeaking, tapping, etc we thought were "habits"

but just after his 10th birthday he had a dramatic (literally overnight) change with deep depression, phobia, anxiety, intense OCD and severely injurious tics exploding. It was a very dramatic change.

That was when he was dx with TS/OCD

Even tho he had never even had strep throat, we did take him to dr Murphy at Shands, and PANDAS was ruled out

so, altho we now know he had tics, and likely OCD from an earlier age, he also had an explosive full onset at age 10, not disimilar to that seen with PANDAS

My three with TS (inherited but not through direct lineage) started to show signs at around 3 or 4 years of age. That's when we first noticed it. They would have mostly throat-clearing tics back then. At around age 10, the tics got more complex. Our 16yo had about a year and a half with no tics at all when she was about 13 and 14 but then they came back. There are definite food/additive triggers and seasonal allergies can be a trigger for them too. Also lighting (fluorescent). But stress plays a part too. I imagine there are other triggers that I don't even know about.

When I said inherited but not through direct lineage, I meant that it came from my great aunts and uncles but that grandparents weren't affected by TS. I never was either. My dh's family has autistic spectrum traits and one of mine has Aspergers as well as TS. I sometimes wonder if the mix of the two traits made the TS show up even more. No one else in my family tree seems affected by TS since a few generations ago and none had more than one child affected.

Kelly, I agree that trying to figure the whole tic disorder spectrum can be very overwhelming at times because of the seemingly endless triggers and causes.

Cheri, I was wondering if you happen to remember if your son had an illness at 10 around the time of the explosive increase in symptoms?
