michele
Has anyones child ever gotten hives while on supplements with antibiotics? Andrew woke up itching in the night. By morning he had welts and raised splotches on him and some hives. I gave him Benedryl. However, he has been on Augmentin for over a week and taurine and zinc picolinate for about four days. Can they devlop an intolerance to antibiotics like Augmentin? Does this mean he won't be able to tolerate Pen V anymore? Is Aug in the pen family? Okay the taurine was helping the tics but now what? Stop them one by one or all at once? Try to find the allergic one? Has anyone ever had allergies to Zinc or taurine before? I am confused. I left a couple messages with the Dr.'s but haven't heard back yet. We go to the clinic at 2:30 today for neurology maybe he can help. emma1
Michele, So very sorry -- it is so confusing, isn't it? Hives are a side effect of augmentin. Of course, it could be an allergic reaction to -- well, anything. My oldest once had a reaction and it turned out not to be to the antibiotic alone, but to the antibiotic combined with the cold medicine I gave. It turned out I could give each alone with no reaction, but not together. It hope Andrew gets better quickly.
Chemar
it definitely sounds like an allergic reaction and I would leave an *urgent* message for your doctor to contact you asap. hopefully the neuro will have some input I am allergic to penicillin and I had severe hives, itching and swelling from it, also shortness of breath etc.
michele
Surprisingly the ID Dr. said to continue the Augmentin to give Benedryl for twenty four hours. If it doesn't go away to call them back. She doesn't see why the allergy would be to the antibiotic since he has been fine on it for over a week. She said it may be an allergy to something else and they don't deal with Zinc or Taurine. The DAN Dr. said he has never had a case of an allergy to ZINC or Taurine. His initial rash seems better today and he wasn't itching after Benedryl and the hives were better. I soaked him in a tempid bath with epsom salt. I put cream on it where he had scratched it. Hopefully it goes away soon. Did your allergy to Pen develop over time or was it immediate? I worry about that shortness of breath. Thanks.
