Guest Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Hi Everyone, This is somewhat off topic. Have you ever noticed that if your kids stick their tongue out it tremors a little bit or moves to one side? I'd love to know if anyone sees this happening in their child or themselves. If you do see it happening has your child ever been on any tic related medication? I'm interested because I've started speech therapy again. I had major articulation issues as a child, and I was in speech therapy from 3 years of age until my 6th grade year in school. At that time, it became uncool to be in speech therapy, and I choose to stop doing speech therapy. I still have some slight articulation issues that bother me, so I've decided to get back into speech therapy. My speech therapist has noticed that when I stick my tongue out it almost has a tremor(spasm) like movement. I've also noticed this in the past, but it's never been any concern to me. My thinking is that it possibly could be tardive dyskinesia type movements caused from tic medications used while I was a child. Any ideas? Carolyn
patty Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Carolyn, My son also has a speech issue tho he does not have what you describe. Now looking back i believe it is sensory related because he had gross & fine motor issues that are resolved now. But he still has a tacile issue that i am still working on. My son had a year of speech therapy before starting kindergarten and another 1/2 year in kindergarten. Now, in his 2nd grade, his speech is much better but still need some work for certain sounds. Since you mentioned you have oral sensory issues, i am wondering if this is all related. Pat
kim Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Carolyn, I had both boys stick their tongues out. Did it myself too. No quivers or sideways action. No tic meds for either boys, except a fairly breif bout of clonidine.
Sunflower Posted November 10, 2007 Report Posted November 10, 2007 I also noticed that. Do you have troble swalling meds too? It could be the med thats is or caused this. Guest Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 No, I don't have trouble swallowing meds. I asked my sibling who is also a speech language pathologist about this. This tongue movement is commonly seen in patients with Parkinson's. I was told not to worry because this tongue movement is probably just part of my TS. I do think that it is most likely due to meds and not the TS itself, but my SLP (Speech Language Pathologist) has dropped the subject now so I don't worry about it. Carolyn
iladvocate Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Tongue movements are a sign of tardive dyskinesia but many medications don't cause it. All antipsychotics (except for Clozaril) do. Tradazone can. And other medications for physical disabilities. Google "patient education tardive dyskinesia" and see if your son has taken any of the medications on the list are ones he has taken ever even in the past. In that case obtain a refer to a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist. If not it could be part of Tourrette's which of course is complex. As for Clonidine it actually treats tardive dyskinesia (which I have in advanced forms) and I've used it in the past for that and it of course can't cause it and although it has a strong side effect profile it is helpful for a fair amount of disabilities, Tourrette's included.
