kallik
My son has been taking only 0.1mg. of Clonidine since he started his tics and ADHD two years ago. I think the Clonidine mostly helps the ADHD. But strangely, I noticed after he took the Clonidine, he would seem to have a small throat clearing episode, leading me to think he's having a reaction to the Clonidine. This happens almost every time! Anyway, he's been getting magnesium for about a year in the form of magnesium oxide, 250mg. a day, but we recently started him on magnesium citrate instead, the same amount, because we learned that it's more quickly absorbed. The problem is, since starting the magnesium citrate, his throat clearing tics that had gone away since April, have come back even stronger with head thrusting when he clears his throat. It might just be a reoccurance of the same tic, but I was wondering if magnesium that's supposed to help tics, can make you tic harder. Or if because it's so quickly absorbed, it's making the Clonidine stronger, somehow. Other changes are, we've started letting him play his Nintendo DS again, and letting him have pizza on the weekends, which he has food sensitivities to, and drinking Capri Suns that have no artificial colors or flavors, but have high fructose corn syrup. (I know, I loosened the reins somewhat, and he might be paying for it!) Anyway, if anyone knows if magnesium could actually cause a worsening of tics, or the combination of the magnesium and Clonidine could be a bad combination, please let me know. Thanks. Guest
Hi kallik, I've never heard of this happening before with Clonidine & Magnesium, but then again everyone reacts differently. The different form of Magnesium may be increasing your son's tics. I took Clonidine with Magnesium for atleast 7 years and only displayed benefits from adding the Magnesium along with other supplements in. I'd suggest trying to be more strict with the Nintendo DS & food sensitivities. If that doesn't work, you could try switching back to the magnesium that was successful before. Chemar
hi honestly I would think his diet has more to do with the resurgence of the tics than anything else If he is not photosensitive, then his Nintendo should not be affecting him for my son, if we slip on diet or on his supplements, he has increased tics... here is iHerb's interaction for clonidine with supps page, which only mentions two things not to take with clonidine, magnesium NOT being one of them
