Using Hand Soap as Shower Gel?

Recommended Posts

I have been using Trader Joe's hand soap for the past months. I love the price ($2.59 for 17 oz) and it is free of color, fragrants, perservatives and harsh ingredients.

It is made out of: Natl & plant derived surfactants, earth salts, lavender oil, chamomile oil, tea tree oil, grapefruit seed oil, tocopherol (vit E), and water.

Anyone see any reason why this cannot be used as shower gel?

I notice shower gel is always much more expensive than the hand soap. Perhaps it is a marketing tool to make more money.

What kind of hand soap do you use? And body lotion? Also, what laundry detergent do you use?

It is expensive to eat mostly organic. I am trying to get more for my dollar.

Thx for sharing. I love to know more about money saving tips if you have any.

Hey Patty,

We use 365's olive aloe hand soap, got that at Whole Foods. I use straight olive oil as lotion. I really like it as the last step of the bath. I'm hoping it traps the epsom salts on the skin with the layer of oil. (soft skin and continued mag support after the bath is over.)

We use Seventh Generation laundry soap, but I cut the full load dose in half and add a cup of baking soda.

(buy the big bag of baking soda at Costco)

I use 2 parts baking soda, and 1 part borax, and 1 part hot water to clean my porcelain sinks and tubs.

window cleaner- 1 part water 1 part vinegar works great. Put it into a spray bottle it lasts a long time.

I don't have carpet, but I read club soda gets out emergency spills. pour it on spot and blot with a clean rag.

Clean wood floors with tea- Brew 1 qt of boiling water with 1-2 tea bags, let it come to room temp. wring out clean cloth to damp and wipe floor. (tannic acid in the tea is good for the wood)

Furniture polish- 1 cup olive oil 1/4 cup lemon juice. I really like this one no smelly sprays.( have to shoo the dog she likes to lick the chair legs when I use the olive oil) Also buy the huge bottle of olive oil from costco.

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day,

C.P.

Thx for the tips, esp regarding the Seventh Generation laundry detergent. I too use it and it is expensive. It is good to know that i can cut the cost.

Do you use extra virgin olive oil or just regular olive oil? Does it leave the skin oily? It is hard to find a clean lotion. Right now we are using Audrey Organics and again it is expensive. So i have been using Jojoba oil on myself recently and it seems to seal in the moisture after a shower pretty well and it does not leave a greasy feeling.

I am wondering since olive oil has Omega 3, by using it on the body, can one absorb the omega 3 thru skin? That would be an added bonus.

Patty,

I buy the Filippo Berio (extra virgin) at costco. (big bottle 101 fl oz) It lasts forever. (so many uses too)

I have very dry skin, and the olive oil does not leave my skin oily. (not sure for someone with normal skin type) My son has dry skin in the winter.

Good question about the omega 3 absorbed into the skin.
