New and need help

My daughter is 8 and started blinking quite a bit last January. I'm not sure how it lasted but I'm thinking less than a month. This happened again a few months later. Each time we thought it was something with her glasses. About a month and a half ago (I think) she started scrunching up her nose. Sometimes it would happen at the same time as the blinking. It started to get constant and I was freaked out. My pediatrician didn't seem to know tons on the topic and said it was probably just transient tic disorder, don't worry, etc. Well, we ended up seeing a highly-regarded pediatric neurologist two weeks ago and he said 20-30% chance of mild Tourette's. Our world has been turned upside down. This has been the hardest thing we've even been through. The doctor recommended the Paleo diet, no gluten, no dairy, no eggs, no artificial flavors, no sugar. We've been following this about 90%. My daughter ate normally yesterday (Thanksgiving) and has had two birthday parties with cake. She does have milk with cereal (we are trying to get her to like almond milk). I am also giving her B complex vitamin, Magnesium Taurate (250 mg) and Tic Tamer. Epson salt baths occasionally too. These modifications have been going on for two weeks (some are newer like the Tic Tamer and Mag). We've seen some improvement. I'm wondering how long it takes to see more improvement? Can someone recommend other things we should do? It's so tough. I try to take it one day at a time and not worry too much. We have no family history and she doesn't have any other things going on. Please tell me that time will help all of us. Oh, and to end on a positive note...my daughter has not been bothered by any of this at all except for the diet changes. She's perfectly happy and I'm praying it stays that way.

Hi

does your daughter have any vocal tics? Usually for a TS dx there need to be motor and vocal tics (not necessarily together) for a year or more, and most often, also a family history of tics or TS

Improvement with treatment really is dependent on just what is causing the tics...and also if the treatment is relevant to that cause..

Do you have Sheila's book on Natural treatments for Tics & Tourette? http://latitudes.org/store/tics-tourettes-book/

It really is a great resource

Also take a look at our Helpful Threads section pinned to the top of this forum

You may want to consider doing Epsom baths more often. Morton's Epsom Lotion is also a good stanby to rub in when you skip the baths.

In addition to the no artificial flavors that your doc has recommended, I would add no artificial *anything*....we found the coloring one of the worst tic triggers!

Also consider having some testing done to determine just what foods are offenders as not everyone is dairy or gluten intolerant.

It's great your daughter is not botherd by the tics, and my best advice to you is try not to let your anxiety over them impact her...it is hard I know but I learned over the years that one of the worst tic triggers is us parents fussing about them!!

My son is now in his mid 20s and doing great, and he had very severe TS as a child.....so do be encouraged....things can and do get better once one takes the right steps to reduce triggers and improve what you can.

Thank you for your response! My daughter has had a suspected vocal tic but we're not 100% sure. She clears her throat quite a bit. I bought the epson salt lotion. Thank you for that suggestion. I'm trying not to get upset but it's hard. We went for blood work yesterday so maybe that will give us some answers.

  • 2 weeks later...

First hello ans sorry but my english is not good enough. I also join to the topic. I'm 28 yo and I just wondering what should I do. I tried lot of medicine, but I had many side effects like: somnolence, lack of strength, dizziness, shaking hands etc.

Now I don't take any pills except multivitamin and magnesium which I almost finished.

I just wondering, what should I do now. I though about food allergy test (food detective) and also about candida test. Does anyone tried that?

Thanks for any idea.
