juls
For those who use inositol, how much do you give? Chemar suggested 500mg for children in a recent dialog but I have also read that OCD needs a much higher dosage (one study used 18 g for adults). The following link has been helpful to me, but I was wondering what doses others are using? http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/...ol_and_OCD.html I'm currently giving 2400mg a day and was actually thinking of raising that amount, especially based on the link above. My son is 8 and almost 90lbs. Do any of you give high doses to children? Any ill effects? Thanks, Juls
Chemar
Juls here is iHerb's Health Encyclopedia info on Inositol high doses are sometimes used in adults we have never gone above 650mg per day as that is what out doctor recommended, especially as we also had samE/methionine and 5HTP in his regimin I have found that for my son, it is often best to remain at minimum dose to see the most effect...we always start him on lowest dose and then move up if needed..we have frequently found that upping the dose doesnt help...if anything, it sometimes has the opposite effect That is my son tho and other kids may be different Others may have experience with inositol at higher doses
Dedee
Does anyone know if there is a specific reason why you can't mix inositol with milk? I really would like to try this for my daughter who exhibits symptoms of generalized anxiety and seperation anxiety. However, she does not drink juices, and I thought I might be able to hide it in chocolate milk without her noticing. Just curious. Thanks. Laurensmom
I generally use no more than 500-1000 mg daily, and we take breaks. I'm kind of an "as needed" user. I am considering a b complex daily for my daughter based upon Bonnie G's recs. A bit of info here: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Inositol.html Obviously, before you run out and try anything new, you should always consult your physician. If your physician recommends trying this, you might also want to mention the following information to him or her: 1. It cannot be taken together with Lithium, as it seems to block its action. 2. The chief side effects of inositol are gas and diarrhea. Some people get this for the first few days and then it clears up. Some of those taking it never have this side effect, and some only get it when they take more than a particular amount. 3. I have heard reports that caffeine lowers inositol levels in the body, so if you are a heavy coffee drinker, you might consider cutting down or eliminating this from your diet. Actually, stimulants such as caffeine can sometimes contribute to hair pulling, etc. 4. It should be purchased in powdered form, and taken dissolved in water or fruit juice. It has a sweet taste, and is chemically related to sugar. If you mix it continuously for about 2 minutes, and if it is allowed to stand for about 10 minutes after mixing it, it seems to dissolve better. If it still doesn't dissolve well (not all brands do), stir it up and drink it quickly before it settles. 5. Inositol is a water soluble vitamin, so although the doses appear to be large, it will not build up to toxic levels in the body. Whatever the body doesn't use is excreted. The average person normally takes in about 1 gram of inositol each day via the food they eat. 6. It can be built up according to the following schedule (1 teaspoon=2 grams, and be sure to use a measuring spoon) for an adult: Week 1 - 1 teaspoon/2x per day Week 2 - 1 teaspoon/3x per dayWeek 3 - 1.5 teaspoons/3x per day Week 4 - 2 teaspoons/3x per day Week 5 - 2.5 teaspoons/3x per day Week 6 - 3 teaspoons/3x per day A child can be built up to 3 teaspoons (i.e. 6 grams) per day over the same six week period. Dosages for adolescents can be adjusted according to weight. In either case, it is best to allow side effects to be the guide. If they begin to occur, it is not considered wise to increase the dosage unless they subside. Once a person has reached either the maximum dosage, or the greatest amount they are able to tolerate, it is best to try staying six weeks at that level to see if there is any noticeable improvement. If there is none by the end of that time, it should probably be discontinued. As with any treatment, those who are absolutely positive that it will help are only setting themselves up, and may wind up more than disappointed. Everything works for someone, but nothing works for everyone.
Dedee
I just read the article sited above that said to mix the powder with either water or juice and wanted to make sure that there wasn't a specific contraindication against mixing it with milk. Thanks for the reply. Dedee
Laurensmom
Deedee, I've mixed it with chocolate milk personally. Not the "Latitude PC" thing to do I'm sure, but I can't imagine a contradiction? Puritan told me the substance is made from corn husks - period. Chemar
Laurensmom...not quite sure what you mean there by "not the Latitude PC thing to do" as mentioned before, my son always takes his supps with milk or chocolate milk the only reason milk should be avoided is when there is allergy or sensitivity to dairy/lactate

naturalhealth
As far as dose goes, I would definitely speak to your doctor before deciding on a dose or increase your child's dose. It's prudent to be cautious even with natural supplements before giving heavy doses. And I don't see any reason why the Inositol couldn't be combined with milk. Have you considered combining it with applesauce or something along those lines? That's a little closer to the fruit juice recommendation, although I really don't think it should be a problem for you.
MichaelTampa
I am 41 years old and have Tourette's with various mental/emotional components, including those that will get labeled OCD. I used to get about 900 mg/day, and now only take 350 mg/day. It went down when I got the dental device from Dr. Sims. I too had read that for adults 15-25 grams can be helpful. My amounts were determined using muscle testing (kinesiology) by my acupuncturist, as the maximum amount that my body said would be useful for me. By the way, by itself, my body could tolerate even less, but when combined with choline and panthothenic acid (such as in Country Life's tablet), then my body could benefit from more. I am surprised to hear anyone looking to cover the taste of this stuff up! I found the pure inositol powder to be very sweet. To do it quickly, I would just mix in water, but, for fun, I would sprinkle on food, like corn bread (back when I was eating corn flour, so sad, no more of that for now).
