Need feedback on Dr. L.

Recommended Posts

So we have been dealing with OCD/general anxiety for a few years now. After dd received her nasal flu vaccine in the fall her behavior was off the charts. Knew something was wrong and started research on PANDAS. Took to ped and he confirmed PANDAS diagnosis and put her on two wks. Cephalexin and would not extend it or do any blood work. Found Dr. L on PANDAS network and had to wait 3 months for appt. finally went on 3/4/14 and she also confirmed diagnosis and had ton of bloodwork done. DD is now on clindamycin, Zithromax and prednisone, today is one week of meds. Of course, no change yet, but wondering how long before we'll see any change in behavior? Also, anyone familiar with Dr. L and what is your opinion about her? Feed back, please!!!

My son (age 5) is a patient of Dr. L. He has been a patient since the end of January of this year. He, too, began exhibiting PANDAS symptoms the day after the flu mist vaccine. He is currently on clindamycin and prednisone (he has been on an antibiotic since January 29). He is doing well. All symptoms are gone except a motor tic (it has improved, but is definitely still there).

We really like Dr. L a lot and I have had a great experience with her staff. If you have particular questions, or want to discuss more, please feel free to send me a message and I would be happy to respond.

I have two kids with Dr L, and we have seen massive improvement with my daughter, while my son is lagging. While she is quite knowledgeable one common complaint was that she was only responsive in the context of an office visit. But things are changing for the better. Her office appears to have gone through a staffing change at the end of 2013, they have hired some more supportive and helpful assistants and she has hired a PA. She will now answer emails now.

There is also differences in protocol followed between PANDAS doctors. Dr L seems to be more focused on strep and initial use of antibiotics followed by prophylactic penecillin, steroids bursts and IVIG (although we have yet to get to that last treatment.)

You had second question on response time and that appears to be specific to the child. My daughter had an abrupt change 4 days into clindamycin - she slept through the night and her appetite picked up dramatically, and after another couple weeks more PANDAS symptoms subsided. My son showed gradual improvement, followed by regression, which we are now all suffering through.

Does Dr L check viral titers? I would think the amount of antibiotics should of eliminated a large amount of behaviors. For us Valcyclovir helped tremendously with viral infections while the antibiotics took out strep and mycoplasma.

Have you eliminated gluten and casein? When the immune system becomes dysfunctional you want to eliminate all areas that may create stress so the body can heal.

I have to say Dr. L gave my child back her life. She had the IVIG and had no symptoms for 1 1/2 years. It is amazing. I am so happy that she is part of the fight to help children with PANDAS. She has a great heart and great compassion for these children. I am thankful everyday that she treated my child.
