MomwithOCDson, I agree that discussiosns about docs can are unbalanced, but in the opposite direction. Every time someone posts anything remotely negative (and I agree, this thread is far from the negative we have all seen before) this discussion about protecting docs happens, and the thread gets drleted. But there are countless pages of recommendations and raves about certain docs - all sugar coated with the negative experiences deleted. It creates unrealistic expectations of these docs for new patients.

 

I'm just not a fan of censorship of any form, although I do understand the need at times. I just think that the rules should apply uniformly.

 

On a side note, when we were choosing our 2nd specialist (the first was local of us so it was a no brainer), I read various posts from others (good and bad) to form opinions before i asked for input and gained insight I wouldn't have gathered from PM's.

 

I don't think we should stand by or condone doctor bashing in anyway. But the rules dictate negative experiences should be done via PM (whoch i dont disagree with), then the same should go for positive PM's and doc recommendations - to balance the opinions.

I agree that over the years in which I've participated on the forum, there have been, as you've rightly noted, some glowing, almost hero-worship-ish posts about some providers. And perhaps those have inadvertently misled some folks.

 

In the end, it's sort of caveat emptor, isn't it? I mean, we have to use our own powers of perception, of discretion, of discernment, of reading between the lines, of judging whether our sensibilities line up reasonably well with a particular providers', etc. And its unlikely that either the glowing testimonials or the bashing posts are going to line up entirely with our own experiences; it's much more likely to fall somewhere in the middle. It also probably depends largely upon the level of our child's/family's distress at that point in time and how successfully a particular provider is able to demonstrate an efficacious protocol that quells the resulting desperation.

 

In the end, from the years of posts, presentations, PMs, etc., I've come to believe that each of the noted docs has his/her gifts, and each has his/her issues that may or may not turn out to be a "deal-breaker" for you, again, depending upon your needs and sensibilities. So if someone has and takes the time to comb through the post history here and then pose remaining questions via PM, they're likely to get a fairly balanced perspective overall. But these single threads can loom large, I think, especially for newer folks tuning in. Hence my concern.

I'm not offended at all. Ophelia, believe it or not, I actually very much do understand the feelings. You have a different perspective than most parents here but imagine having a very sick, dysfunctional child and you can't get ahold of the doctor. This disease has sickened me through the very stress of dealing with my son added to the stress of trying desperately to find help.

 

My point is every one of these very few doctors have their positives and negatives. The two I've had personal experience with have office staffs that need some serious training. I imagine though, they burn out after a while dealing with all the stressed out parents of very sick children.

 

I don't have unlimited resources to check out local doctors but I kept at it. My current doctor does not take insurance. It seems out of the box thinking doctors don't deal well with square box insurance companies. My local doctor does not take insurance but she charges a fraction of what the big names charge and I get 60% back when I file my out of network claims, less than what I pay in deductible for the the big names. I also get abx when I call her office for refills on the same day, unless she's out of the office.

 

I sent all the doctors my son sees or has seen the flyer and schedule of speakers for the NE PANDAS conference. One day, maybe the light bulb will come on for a few of them.
