My 5, now 6 year old son started eye blinking last year. I did take him to his pediatrician and they told me to ignore it & not to mention it to him because that could make it worse. (up until that point my husband & I were constantly like.."why do you keep doing that?" Do your eyes hurt? ", etc. They did go away and then he started a deep breathing type tic, then various hand gestures, etc. He now for the first time is making a quick but very repetetive HUM sound..constantly..along w/ smelling of his hands! I now know not to mention it to him..I Know he is already embarassed by it & he will tell me it's just something he has to do! I so fear that he will be made fun of, I dont want this for him and PRAY he outgrows it..I would welcome ANY advice on how to handle this as a mom. Do little ones GROW out of this & does it normally worsen? He is a fantastic, outgoing, supersmart, social little boy!! Thanks for any advice/info/suggestions!

Welcome aboard, it is really hard when you first starting looking for answers. This forum is sensational and the knowledge in here is incredible. To answer your question, yes some kids do grow out of it, but some do not, Some tics are at their worse when they are diagnosed, but for some they will get worse. I know that this is the hardest part that I have had to get my head around, because I was in absolute fear when I first started to learn about tics.

The good thing is that a lot of people in hear are having good results with nutrition, reducing toxicities, food and environmental intolerances. Sheila Rogers puts it perfectly in her book "Natural Alternatives to Tics and Tourettes" - there is either something in their bodies that they don't need, or there is something their bodies need that they don't have. So that is where most of us are working from, identifying the triggers. Although I'm very new at this myself, I can say since we can pinpoint now what was tics earlier this year, my son thankfully has not got any worse, the tics change continually, but I'm very hopeful at the moment. Right now we regularly go to the Chiropractor, I've eliminated all chemicals in the home and making some diet modifications (MSG will definitely give him a bad day). It's like working on a Jigsaw puzzle but seeing little improvements is driving me forward.

Feel free to ask any and all questions, the people in here are invaluable.

I've heard of a nurse practitioner on the north side of Indy that sounds like she would be willing to do testing instead of dismissing things outright. (Keep in mind we have NOT been to her, this is just from talking with her nurse.) I would be glad to PM you her name, if you would like.

She's a bit too far for us right now. (We're in south central IN, and are trying to get help for PANDAS closer to home.)

On a side note, Pilbara mentioned Sheila's book, and talked about having not enough of something they need, or too much or something they need. I just spoke with a chiropractor who is into functional medicine, and he said he had Tourette's when he was young, but through lifestyle changes isn't bothered with it anymore. (Sorry, I didn't ask what he thought specifically helped, as my kids aren't usually bothered with tics or movements.) I keep running across the idea that the copper/zinc ratio is off in many cases.

Let me know if you would like me to PM the Nurse Practitioner's number. Or maybe see if your own doc would be willing to check for nutritional deficiency's, like zinc. (Don't assume that if your kids eat a well balanced meal that they are getting everything they require - genetic issues can influence that.)

I would eliminate GMO food as much as possible. Besides inflammation studies are suggesting a chelation process that eliminates crucial minerals necessary for communication signaling in the body. Magnesium is one that is depleted effecting uptake of vitamin D,hence low levels in some kids and many other important functions. Serotonin necessary for creating tryptophan for restful sleep and less anxiety is effected from a compromised gut. I saw a video from a MIT Dr.which explains this.

When we went with the cave man/ Paleo diet per our Dr. his IGG allergy numbers dropped drastically in 6 weeks. One more layer!

Our dd had tics and involuntary movements and tremors prior to getting help. This was coupled with behavioral changes. I agree with Pilbara and the book reference regarding adding what is needed and removing potential triggers. I have a Columbus,OH Doc I highly recommend that will do the whole gammut of testing and very comprehensive overview of your childs health and history. He is a DAN certified doc who starts with the natural treatments first.

PM me if you want more info or docs name.
