cara615
My son's big blood test came back and it showed mitochondrial and methylation dysfunction. i am terrified. What does this mean for his future? Does he actually have mitochondrial disease? Will other systems in his body be eventually affected? He does not have any muscle weakness or fatigue or any of the mito symptoms except for the TS. We will be giving him methyl B12 for the methylation issue and I am hoping this helps him but what to do about the Mito? Should I get genetic testing done? I have no idea how serious this is or if it will affect his quality of life or life expectancy. has anyone had any experience with this?
cara615
Ok I just spoke to my son's doctor and she kind of calmed me down. She said what she saw was not severe and that she sees it often so I guess its not the mito disease that I was reading about on-line? Its more of a deficiency that needs to be corrected and she feels that it can be (especially the methylation issues). i guess we just need to plow ahead and see if we see progress. i am glad i have information to work with and not going into this blindly. cara615
Since we found out that his seratonin was low we started 5-HTP last night and his tics are increased today and the screaming is back! After all the progress with the NAC too!! Wondering if I should stop the 5-HTP and give it some time and start the MB12 that our doctor is recommending for the methlyation issue. maybe he needs to be able to methylate before he can handle the seratonin? Any thoughts on this? I know sometimes you need to give it a couple of days before you can see results but if the tics increased directly after giving him the 5-HTP, I worry that it will only get worse. rissakaye
I would ask this question over on the PANDAS/PAN board on this site. That board's quite a bit busier and there are multiple poster over there who deal with methylation issues. I think they could probably help. Chemar
if his tics increased with 5HTP I would discontinue it. Not everyone can handle it and it is pretty potent. Many people prefer inositol in young kids especially as it is a B vitamin and has a much gentler way of increasing serotonin If you do a search on methylation you will find quite a few threads on this forum too, though yes, the PANDAS parents have a lot of info on this, especially on the genetics/mutations that cause it.
