So glad to hear that your son is doing better with his vocal tic. Does he have motor tic also? What kind of medication is he on? Did you son have an allergy test for food and environment?

I am looking into giving my son magnesium supplement. As i understand magnesium taurate is recommended for its absorption rate. The reason for the magnesium is because i discover my son responses well to Epsom salt bath and also 80% of people with tics is deficient in magnesium. When he is having his head nodding tic, the epsom bath helps reduce it. Have you tried epsom bath for your son? 2C per bath. If he is having a particularly bad day, i would do it 2X a day, once in the AM and PM. The salt left on the body suppose to last for about 9 hours.

Another note on magnesium, try to stay away from magnesium oxide due to its poor absorption. Since magnesium is an alkaline minerals, it is best given between meals on an empty stomach. If your son is having problem sleeping, take it right before bed will help induce better sleep.

Please keep me posted on your son's progress. BTW, my son also react to fish oil in theraputic dosage.

I appreciate the peoms. They are beautiful and encouraging.

Patty,

My son has an allergy to everything under the sun. So far it has not helped to take them out of his diet. We have been trying so many things over the past year, that I think he is going to have to grow out of some of it. He does take the baths and since he doesn't have motor tics hardly at all... the bath don't help with the vocal that I can tell. I found Natural Calm mag supplement comes in a powder mix with water and drink. We did the taurate and we think he can't do the taurate, but it is so very hard to tell with him because we really don't see much help. I wish I could better discribe, him he looks so normal until you hear an outburst. I guess that is why I have had to dive into reading because I'm so tired of waiting and watching to see what will work and so disappointed when there is no change. St. Frances de Sales said "God makes sure our cross is not one ounce too heavy or one inch too large for us." I have come to understand I make this cross too much by living in the past (pre- TS) and worring about the future. I wish I had more to offer people who's children have more vocal tics that gives hope, but all I have is prayer.

How old is your son? Thanks for the info on the empty stomach I did not know that.

Hi good night,

I have been surfing this board for about 2 months. I had hoped I wouldn't have any reason to post but after today, I realize I needed to know all I can. My name is Jackie and I have a wonderful little 7 year old boy... Last year, I notice my son blinking his eyes a lot. He was unable to control them. Then this year about a month into second grade, I notice he started having facial movements. Then about a month ago, I notice his head started to shake. His head shaking doesn't happen all the time....These movements have not disrupted his schooling in anyway.. He is an A and B student..I spoke to his teacher and she says his movement is not any more unusual than any other child and he does not have ADHD. I also took him to the doctor and he thinks it stress..At first I thought it was but now I know it’s not..My son has adjusted to 2nd grade and he is very happy..

I’m writing you because today I got really scared when he asked me if he could shake his head..It wasn’t dramatic but the fact that he asked made me think he needed to do it..He shook his head 3 different times. Each time it was a back and forth movement..No-one in my family have TS that I know of..Please tell me if you think he has TS and what do I need to do now..

Thank you,

A very scared mom

The epsom salt helps more for my son's motor more vocal. However, it does help with the vocal with him. My son mostly have vocal while eating, it is infrequent and very slight. It is hardly noticeable unlike when he started his tics.

Chiropractic also helps with vocal tic. Have you tried it?

When my son had his sudden onset of tics, there is no rythm or reasons. He ticked constantly unless he is sleeping.

My son's tic have drastically subsided after various treatments:

1. used NAET to desensitize chicken, egg, white & brown rice, wheat, gluten, oat, oat bran, dairy, milk, cheeze, casein, yogurt & butter

2. chiropractic once a month or as needed.

3. avoiding brewers & bakers yeast, MSG, food coloring and preservatives. We stop NAET treatments due to school.

4. use an air purifier ( he also has environmental allergies ).

5. watch LCD TV and computers at home

6. use nontoxic detergent, shampoo, soap and cleaners

7. eat mostly organic

Right now, we are not on any supplements other than epsom bath most nights for the last 21/2 weeks.

My son also has many allergies, instead of avoiding everything at one time, which is almost near impossible, so i split up the food desensitization into 2 parts. With the wheat, dairy out of the day. It allows him to eat nutrious food and build up his immunity. I also think it is important to eat organic whenever possible because organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventional produce. I hope this info is helpful to you.

Patty,

Everything you said you have done we have also done, but have not tried the chiropractic. I thought that would only help with the motor tics I'll look into that. We eat almost all organic too. I can't believe how are food bill has skyrocketed. I'm thankful we have the money, but still try to find ways to keep it down. The cleaning products I think I have worked out good. We use a lot of baking soda and lemon juice. Last week I spent 4 hours scrubbing the grout on the kitchen floor. It really worked great. I also buy the good laundry soap and use half the amount then add baking soda. That way I don't use so much detergent. If you have any good ideas I would love to hear about them. We also eat breakfast for dinner once a week, and roast a organic chicken, then use the chicken juice to make soup. That has helped save some money. We also change the food around alot. He really was upset when he found out he showed up abnormal to alot of foods. I figure if he does not care about the TS then I'm not going to make his life worse by telling him he can't eat the foods he likes. I have put my foot down on the junk food and all the bad stuff out there. He is ok with that as long as I make him a treat he can eat. He loves fruit and vegys thankfully.

If you have any good cheap cleaning ideas let me know.

Thanks C.P.

You mentioned your son is allergy to most everything. What did you do to desensitize your son with his food and environmental allergies? I do feel that food and food additives have a direct impact on my son's tics, more so than the other things that we are avoiding, like nontoxic soap....

When it comes to persevatives. It is in healthy food too, such as bread, salt (anti-caking agent)... I am sure you are aware of it, but just thought to mentioned it.

I agree with you. Eating organic is expensive. I do the same thing, cook the chicken and use the broth for soup. Since i live in N. California, there are quite a bit of stores to choose from. To save money, i have been doing price comparison shopping. It is more work, but i do save $ this way. We also grew a few vegetable this summer to save $.

In regard to cleaning products. I get my laundry detergent, cleaning products and castile soap from Trader Joe. It is pretty reasonable. I have been looking into making my own cleaning products but i just can't find the time right now, since i am busy making most everything from scratch.
