Cum Passus
Hi Chemar, Hoping you can help, have some questions. 1. Has your husband ever tried vitamins first to see if they have an effect on him before you give them to your son? Our son didn't do well with the fish oil, and my husband also was effected by the fish too. 2. How much is your second son like your husband? Our son is so much like my husband its scary. They are like twins. My husband is alot like his father where as his brother is like their mother. (Brother does not have TS.) The only thing I see that all three share in common is they are ambidextrous. Maybe thats not strange but, my girls can't do anything left handed, and husbands brother is not ambidextrous either. 3. How much is food a problem for those who have had TS passed down? I'm wondering because I'm hoping to have tests for food sen. back this week. 4. Last check on the growth chart, son has grown 2 1/4 inches in 9 months. Do you think this is why things have been so bad all these months? 5. What can you tell me about Royal Jelly? Is raw honey just as good? 6. Last one. Have put son on vit. E so fer so good. Flax oil, not sure yet on that one. Thought about B6 next or should I do mag.? I'm just not sure about the B vit. after the bovine liver thing. Thanks for your help. and have a happy holiday. C.P.
Chemar
hi CP just got back from our annual Thanksgiving celebration at church and have family here, so will go through this tomorrow and try to answer as much as I am able
Chemar
Ok let me see if I can answer these 1. Has your husband ever tried vitamins first to see if they have an effect on him before you give them to your son? Our son didn't do well with the fish oil, and my husband also was effected by the fish too. we have found that, although both my husband and son have TS/OCD/ADD etc...yet they clearly have very different biochemistry my husband can take fishoil and derives tremendous benefit from it my son cant go near it (tho he can eat as much fish as he likes) because it drastically increases his tics. For this reason he derives his Omega3 fatty acids from flaxseed oil 2. How much is your second son like your husband? Our son is so much like my husband its scary. They are like twins. My husband is alot like his father where as his brother is like their mother. (Brother does not have TS.) The only thing I see that all three share in common is they are ambidextrous. Maybe thats not strange but, my girls can't do anything left handed, and husbands brother is not ambidextrous either. my son with TS and my husband are very similar in many ways, whereas my older son seems to be more like me(he is 20 and has never exhibited any TS symptoms) My husband is left handed while both sons and me are right handed The one area that both sons take after dad rather than mom is sleep patterns...........all three of them are night owls whereas I am an early bird 3. How much is food a problem for those who have had TS passed down? I'm wondering because I'm hoping to have tests for food sen. back this week. Although we had numerous food sensitivity tests done, none in our family have food allergies. The only clear sensitivities are to artificial and refined foods 4. Last check on the growth chart, son has grown 2 1/4 inches in 9 months. Do you think this is why things have been so bad all these months? hormonal changes (including growth hormone) are known to intensify TS and the pre and pubertal years are usually the worst 5. What can you tell me about Royal Jelly? Is raw honey just as good? Royal jelly is unique and is not the same as honey. We first started using Royal jelly for my son when he had a severe tooth grinding (bruxism) tic as it is very rich in Vit B5=pantothenic acid which is known to help with bruxism. Also, my son doesnt tolerate B complex supplements well, but does tolerate royal jelly which is one of the richest sources of B vitamins Where honey is very healthy (as long is one is not allergic to bee products) yet Royal Jelly is loaded with nutrients ....here is a bit on it from a health encyclopedia "Royal jelly consists of an emulsion of proteins, sugars, lipids and some other substances in a water base. Proteins make up about 13% of royal jelly. Most of the proteins comprise a family called major royal jelly proteins. One protein in royal jelly called royalsin possesses antibiotic properties against gram-positive, but not gram-negative, bacteria. About 11% of royal jelly is made up of sugars, such as fructose and glucose, similar to those found in honey. Lipids comprise about 5% of the substance and consist mainly of medium-chain hydroxy fatty acids, such as trans-10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, which is also thought to possess antimicrobial properties. Royal jelly also contains vitamins, such as pantothenic acid, minerals and phytosterols. Neopterin, or 2-amino-6- (1,2,3-trihydroxypropyl)-4 (3H)-pteridinone, was initially isolated from royal jelly. Neopterin is also found in humans, and, although its precise role is not known, it appears to play an important role in the human immune system." 6. Last one. Have put son on vit. E so fer so good. Flax oil, not sure yet on that one. Thought about B6 next or should I do mag.? I'm just not sure about the B vit. after the bovine liver thing. As mentioned above, Royal Jelly is a great source of B vitamins Vitamin E is good, but certainly no subsitute for the Omega 3 rich flaxseed oil Magnesium is, without a doubt, the most important supplement for people with TS Bonnie Grimaldi has done extensive research on this (she produces BonTech supplements specifically designed for TS, and has info about her research on her website http://www.bonniegr.com ) Our integrative physician advised us to give calcium and magnesium in a 2:1 ratio of 1000mg calcium:500mg magnesium with 50mg zinc and 500mg taurine. Younger and lighter children would need less I believe My son gets 100mg Vitamin B6 per day with his Inositol and 5HTP, primarily to help with his OCD hope that helps CP
Cum Passus
Thanks Chemar, I'll start the cal/mag/zink does it matter what time of day he should take it? Are they to be taken at the same time? Can you tell me a good cal/mag combo? Thanks again, C.P.
Chemar
Hi CP we give the cal/mag/zinc etc at night as magnesium supports rest I now have all supps separate, not in combos to get the most absorbable forms as sadly, the combos tend to have magnesium oxide which is pretty useless, and I also dont like all the fillers they use. Also, because of my son's added complications re Crohn's Disease, primarily liquid supplements now wherever possible I purchase most of our products at iherb.com as they have a very wide selection of top quality brands at the lowest prices and also fast, low cost Priority Mail shipping and discounts for frequent buyers etc I also use The Vitamin Shoppe for some things (we have a store near us and they are also online) and some of the specialized products we use come from Metagenics and also Mountain Rose Herbs (both are online)
Guest
Hi CP, I know your post was intended for Chemar, but I just wanted to respond with my expereince of your following question. 3. How much is food a problem for those who have had TS passed down? I'm wondering because I'm hoping to have tests for food sen. back this week. I have genetic TS even though no one else has ever been diagnosed in my family. I have a 2nd cousin that I've only met once, but he does have noticiable tics & would meet the criteria of TS in my opinion. My dad's uncle had clearly seen tics when he got stressed. My dad will blink his eyes like crazy when he gets upset/stressed. There's clearly a connection even though I'm the only one with a diagnoses as far as I know. My family seems not to talk about it and even when I visited nothing was ever said. With the genetic TS, in my case food is a big problem. My immedidate food allergies consist of the following: almond, banana, dairy, chicken, chocolate, cinnamon, citrus mix, coconut, corn, eggs, garlic, green beans, green olives, green peas, white potato, soybean, cane sugar, tomato, wheat, and bakers yeast. My delayed food sensitivities consist of the following: pinto beans, blueberry, cauliflower, coconut, coffee, egg white, garlic, gluten, cow's milk, oat, peanut, black peper, pineapple, salmon, soybean, black walnut, brewer's yeast, and yogurt. So anyways I just wanted to share my troubles with food even with my genetic TS. Carolyn
Cum Passus
Carolyn, Thank you, and what a sweet picture. I'm glad you told me I have wondered if my girls could pass the gene even though they don't show signs of TS. So when you eat those foods do you see a difference in how bad the tics will be with the allergy vs sensitivities. I mean is one worse then the other? Chemar, I can't tell you how hard it has been to find supps. that don't send me into a panic, "whats that stuff... never heard of that name..." Thanks for letting me know you do them separately, and are concerned about questionable ingredients. C.P.
Guest
Your welcome, C.P. Thanks for the compliment on my picture. Yes, they may pass on the gene. However, I really wouldn't let that be of a concern. My dad told me that I shouldn't have kids because of passing on TS. It didn't change my mind on having children, but hearing that from my dad really hurt. I really don't think most would tell their children that, but I just wanted to mention it. I notice the immediate allergies more than the sensitivities. I think that's because I notice them right away. If I'm sniffling, it's either because I have a cold or I ate dairy/chocolate. I've found that certain foods cause certain symptoms. If I drink milk it gives me a headache also. It's much easier to notice these when all the allergy food items are out of the diet and then I eat one that I'm sensitive/allergic to. Allergies have a lot of effect on my tics. I also struggle a lot from the cravings which make it difficult. However, when I can manage to leave the foods out, I notice a huge difference.
