Coconut Oil - Interesting blog post

Recommended Posts

Mama --

We do use it, and have been using it for a couple of years now. I'm also considering adding it to mine and DH's supplement regimen, though the caloric component is a little bit daunting. I will say, too, that I'm not sure we really use it in sufficient quantities to be therapeutic, but we're looking at it more as a neuroprotective supplement.

I'll add, though, that there was a paper linked here on the forum a year or so ago specifically about coconut oil and Alzheimer's . . . about how only coconut oil, palm kernal oil and one other source (can't remember which one) provide Medium Chain Fatty Acids, which are essential for brain function and not heavily found in a standard western diet. This author, a female MD with a husband who developed Alzheimer's, started giving her husband coconut oil daily -- in fairly copious amounts, if I recall correctly -- and his dementia stopped its progression and, in some respects, even reversed.

I gave my mom a copy of the paper (my dad has Alzheimer's), and she ran out and purchased coconut oil. She swears it's made a difference for him in terms of short-term memory, ability to maintain a conversation and a chain of thought, etc.

So, I definitely think there's something to it!

We've been cooking with extra virgin coconut oil for a couple of years now, as we dicovered DS's balance of Omega 3 and 6 was way off. With the advice of a Biomed dietician we stopped using all other oils in cooking because they convert to trans-fatty acids with heat, even olive oil if it's overheated (it's fine raw.) (Though I believe rice bran oil may not convert with heat.) It works fine in baking too. But as with everything, use it in moderation. Trans-fats are in many processed foods so we avoid them too.

Just heard at a presentation at vit. store that virgin coconut oil is also a good anti-viral and anti-bacterial which can only help.

DS hates the taste of coconut oil, but we found it in capsule form. We've been giving it to both DS's for about 1 1/2 years. Stopped for several weeks as a trial, and during that time he started getting depressed, and having more neuro symptoms. Just started him back on it 2 days ago. Seems to be happier. I don't know for sure that it's related, but for now, at least, I'm going to assume that it is.

We use coconut oil for everything except salad dressings in which we use extra virgin olive oil. The coconut oil that my DH buys is the more expensive organic refined oil because much like your DS I hate the smell and taste of coconuts. Once DH got the regular stuff and I just couldn't eat anything cooked with it.
