hudsonsmom Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 So, I did some research on the test Chemar posted I should ask abuot. The one on pyroluria got me thinking. What I found was this: from: http://www.drkaslow.com/html/pyroluria.html Pyroluria is a genetically determined chemical imbalance involving an abnormality in hemoglobin synthesis. .....Kryptopyrrole has binds to pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and zinc and makes them unavailable for their important roles of co-factors in enzymes and metabolism. These essential nutrients when bound to kryptopyrrole are removed from the bloodstream and excreted into the urine as pyrroles. Arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) is also deficient. So, that would explain the 'recommendation' I found for the elevated dosage of Evening Primrose, because of the omega 6 defeciancy. My next question is, my son when born~ they did routine tests and found out he has abnormal hemoglobin. They did more testing as he got older (6 and 9 months) and still came back with abnormal hemoglobin. But, the doctors hae also said they don't know why it's abnormal. That's all I got. Basically he's fine just this one thing, but it shouldn't effect him. THey told me not to worrya bout it, but it's good to know. So, now that I read this, I wonder if that is a prenote that he may develop TS. I know since I have it the chances he will have it are there. But, since I also know he DOES have abnormal hemoglobin.... I don't want to speculate, but I just can't help but wonder if the two are linked togeter in our case. He shows no tics or anything now, but he is only 16 months. I guess only time will tell. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? This is my best guess: I would think that "abnormal hemoglobin" could possibly cover several different abnormalities. I would think (and of course, I'm no Dr.) that it wouldn't necessarily mean an abnormality in hemoglobin synthesis, where Vitamin B6 & zinc aren't being properly absorbed by the body. However, it's definitely possible. Have you ever had the pyroluria test done? That's what I would do....have the test done on myself & if it came back positive, then I'd be much more concerned about the original "abnormal hemoglobin" result on your son's test. But, if it came back negative, since it's a genetic disorder, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I completely understand your concern, though. I have had TS since I was 8, and my daughter is 3, and we're expecting again. I am very concerned that I will pass this on, and I'm constantly on the lookout for things that might be tics or OCD. The benefit to us having it, though, is that it might be easier in some respects because we can use ourselves as the "guinea pigs" first with figuring out root causes & triggers, etc. I have found with my sister & me, we have very similar triggers. So, rather than put our kids through the initial tests, we can test ourselves, and try that first. Also, I know more what to avoid with her so that maybe, even if she's genetically predisposed, she might never develop it. Like, I'm not giving her her preschool booster vaccinations. I insist she eats a primarily whole-foods diet. If I even *suspect* a strep infection, I'll be rushing to the doctor. Stuff like that. -Julie
Chemar Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Hi pyroluria can and does run in families as does TS, but at the same time I wouldnt be worried about your child at this time. My husband has TS, but our oldest son shows no sign of it (and is in his 20s) whereas our youngest got the whole caboodle so just becasue there are markers, doesnt mean anything will develop. But yes, it is good you know and can be vigilent, because at the first sign of anything you will know to start correct supplementing etc Had we known then what I do now, I would have started supplements and would have done oh so many other things differently for my son when he was still tiny.........but my husband didnt realise he had TS etc till our son was diagnosed 6+ years ago....he had supressed in front of people since childhood and only had mild facial tics that displayed when I met him. His tics and OCDs had been labelled "bad habits" at home and school and so he hid them........... anyway, my point is that it is good to know these things but should not be cause for worry
