Guest Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Hi Guys, I've been having a lot of trouble getting to sleep. It's going on 1:30 and I'm still wide awake. I think I'm low on zinc because when I try to relax to go to sleep I don't stop thinking and thats what's happened before when I'm low on zinc. I only have one white spec on my fingernails. I'm already taking 100 mg of zinc daily (warning-do not take this much zinc without working with a doctor, I work with a doctor on this) and I don't feel comfortable increasing it anymore without talking to my doctor. The other things I've changed is I added olive oil in over three weeks ago. Increased calcium & magnesium about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Added Folinic Acid about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Added oral Reduced L-Glutathione last Thursday. The Chinese Herb started recently for acne instead of trying antibiotics. Does anyone see any problems that might be causing this sleep trouble? Carolyn
Chemar Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Carolyn, I do sympathise as sleep probs are very agravating I agree, before upping the zinc, consult with your doc At first glance the other things like the olive oil, mag/cal shouldnt impact sleep...if anything, magnesium tends to promote rest not sure about folinic acid and the glutathione altho I honestly cant see anything suggesting they could affect your sleep The Chinese herbal prep however may be what is doing this, if it has any energising components in it. I would suggest speaking to the practitioner who recommended it to find out just what its componants do I am not sure if youhave ever tried low dose melatonin for sleep. Again, I would suggest first talking to your doc, especially as the melatonin and serotonin systems are linked biochemically. But my son has found that just 300micrograms of melatonin promotes restful sleep, and I use 600micrograms. Anything higher than that for either of us has the opposite effect and leaves us groggy, irritable and spaced out the next day
orthomolecular Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 You might consider buying some Zinc Status. It is possible that the dose you are taking is not doing enough. Zinc Status costs under $20 and will tell you immediately if you have a zinc deficiency. Consulting with a doctor will not tell you conclusively if you have a zinc deficiency. Very few doctors actually use this product, Zinc Status, in their practice. But you should be under medical supervision when it comes to treating a zinc deficiency. Giving yourself a copper deficiency is a real risk when taking more than 60 mg. of zinc per day. Have you tried some melatonin? I have read that the body needs zinc to make melatonin. Instead taking zinc and possibly causing an imbalance of zinc and copper you might try some melatonin.
Guest Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Chemar, Claire, or anyone else, When I first started the oral reduced-l-glutathione I felt edgy/moody and I guess thinking back to it I was having trouble getting to sleep. I associated it with the traveling to Florida, but even though I got in late to the hotel I had lots of trouble getting to sleep in which I would have normally been so tired I'd fall right to sleep. The edgy/moody issues went away thought after about three days use. I've been on the glutathione for about five days. Do you think I should continue it for another week and see if this subsides and if not stop it for about a week and see what happens? I'm checking on the Chinese Herb formula and should have an answer by this evening. I haven't tried melatonin before, but I really don't want to add it right now because I still have eleven supplements I'm supposed to add in. orthomolecular, Thanks for the info on Zinc Status, but we just tested my zinc levels. My levels are lower than my doctor would like them to be, but we left that alone this time. My copper levels are fine. Carolyn
Pandamom Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 My daughter has difficulty sleeping too. Per her pediatrician she takes an epsom salt (magnesium) bath - we put in 3 cups of epsom salts and lavendar bath oil. It really helps her relax and go to sleep easier. The magnesium is absorbed through the skin as you soak and the lavendar is a natural relaxer. Good luck
Guest Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 My doctor called me back and he said try removing the folinic acid and see if that stops the hyperactivity. If things go back to normal try adding it back in and I may only need it twice a week or something on that order. If that's not the problem then remove glutathione, possibly the extra b-complex, and Chinese herb and start over adding things back in one at a time again. This time I'm going to keep notes. Carolyn
Guest Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 I'm not a 100% sure yet, but I think the sleep issue was caused by the folinic acid. If this is what it was, man it can really cause an amazing amount of hyperactivity in some. I removed it and have been sleeping well again. I'm going to wait a week until I restart it. How do I restart it. My doctor said maybe you only need it once or twice a week. Would that be the best way to add it? If so I could do it on MB12 shot days which I'm doing every three days. Or would it be better to break down the capsules so I'm taking a smaller daily amount. Is breaking down the capsules possible? I've never had to do that before. The capsules contain 800 mcg of folinic acid.
