Ebersolk Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Has anyone's kids had testing which revealed low thyroid and what did you need to do? My daughter's last blood test showed low thyroid and we are now going for a full thyroid panel.
NancyD Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Yes, both DD and I did and our MD put us on thyroid medication. We monitor levels every few months.
JuliaFaith Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 (edited) Ds has been on thyroid meds for over a year now. He is tested every 3 months and numbers are looking much better. Not sure how long he will have to be on meds. Have read somewhere recently that 70-80% of people with lyme have thyroid issues so good you are checking it out. He is also on Desmopressin another harmone-related med. Before dr. put him on this med she asked him if he had to pee a lot. He did not but still on this as well. Besides abx these are the only meds he is taking. The rest is detox and D3. Edited August 2, 2012 by JuliaFaith
mdmom Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 My daughter's first diagnosis (before we found Lyme) was hypothyoridism at age 8. She originally started on Synthroid, which is most commonly prescribed. But for the last 2 years she has taken Armour Thyroid, which she feels better on. Armour is "natural," as it is made from dessicated porcine (pig) thyroid hormones. Keep in mind that the newest endocrinology guidelines for TSH levels are .25 - 2.50, although most labs haven't updated their systems yet. Our Lyme doc says that Lyme often attacks the thyroid and his patients feel best when their TSH levels are below 2. I am being treated for Hypo as well and Armour has changed my life - I no longer have to take afternoon naps!
momcap Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 DS7 had TSH climbing and climbing during his lyme treatment. We saw it peak at almost 7. Just as we were booking an appt with an endocrinologist it finally fell back to normal and has stayed normal for months now. Our LLMD told me that she often sees "blips" in TSH levels while treating for lyme. She said they usually return to normal on their own, but not always.
