bulldog24 Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 The dog has been off abx for a few days. This am my son starts confessing he stuck his middle finger up. I guess I am going to ask my vet if she would consider any prophilactic abx. I have never heard of this in animals. I dont think it will go over well.
ptcgirl Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 I'm very tempted to stick all I my dogs on abx just to see what happens. I love my dogs but I'm starting to feel like in choosing my dogs over my child's health and that is just not okay. Very hard because they are part of our family too.
colleendonny Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 Oh, no. Sounds related. I would definitely ask your vet. If they say no, I would have to get rid of the dog. Easier for me to say, as we don't own any pets. I know it would be hard, but what else could you do?? Hope this is just a mild flare up for DS.

I wonder if that is a source of bacteria? I wonder if it would help to wash your dog in antibacterial shampoo a couple of times a week? It is strange. But, I know my PANDAS dd reacts when her sister gets sick. How is your dogs mouth? Teeth? Maybe a dental cleaning? An antibacterial mouth rinse? http://www.amazon.com/C-E-T-0-12-Chlorhexidine-Mouth-Rinse/product-reviews/B00029XOUC/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm/185-3227864-2054020?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending Edited May 22, 2012 by EAMom
Missmom Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) If the vet won't prescribe them for you then you could try talking to someone at your local pet store. I remember reading something about being able to buy amox. At pet stores over the counter, because fish can take amoxicillin and it is the same as the human variety. I am not sure how this relates to dogs but maybe a manager at your local pet store might know. Just a thought. If that doesn't work maybe the dog could spend more time outside and somewhat separated from your son. Oh and one more thought you could also try your local farm store or feed and seed, they might know more as well. Edited May 22, 2012 by Missmom

Mostly Large animal stuff, but it's still antibiotics. I agree that having the dog stay outside might be a good experiment.
bulldog24 Posted May 22, 2012 Author Report Posted May 22, 2012 Thank you for all the info. I am going to see what the vet will do- she is not in until tomorrow. i will certainly pick my sons health over the dog. She cant stay outside, one because I dont think its nice, but she is a bulldog and they are not the outside type. She has bad skin/ears which are great on abx. I just dont have high expectations that the vet will get this, ya know? I certainly can get my hands on plenty of abx anyway.....
airial95 Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 My husband and I have had a similar conversation - the ONLY time our son has been 100% symptom free was immediatly post T&A last November - for almost 6 weeks. He was on Augmentin, but at the time of the surgery - our ENTIRE family was on abx, (PANDAS daughter for 30 days, hubby and I for 14, and both dogs for 14) and we completely disinfected the entire house (we were determined for him not to get strep again...yeah right!) So far in 2012, he's had strep 4 times and myco 1x. Each time my daughter goes on abx as a precaution (she's had 2 strep infections this year herself), and hubby and I get cultured and/or do a 5 day z-pack for good measure (brought a TON of them back from our last trip overseas...just for this purpose!) My husband is convinced it must be the dogs since they're the only ones who don't go on abx every time...and since they were on when we were 100%... We plan on asking Dr. B about this possibility in June at our first appt with him.
bulldog24 Posted May 24, 2012 Author Report Posted May 24, 2012 Well its adefinite possibility. A goodstart might be asking to give the pets a shot of bicillin?? its cheap and "SHOULD" clear up strep
tpotter Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) The dog has been off abx for a few days. This am my son starts confessing he stuck his middle finger up. I guess I am going to ask my vet if she would consider any prophilactic abx. I have never heard of this in animals. I dont think it will go over well. I actually did that 2 months ago, and my vet agreed (but he's also the one who totally "got it", when flareups got their worst, and we had just adopted the dog.) He's also the one who specifically said: "have the neurologist call me, and tell me what she wants me to do" (she wanted the dog shot up with penicillin! Now, I have learned that when i see the dog start licking the floor constantly, and having increased seizures, I suspect that it's the reason that DS16 is having a flare, and I start doggie on more abx. I haven't told vet (I had some azith left over from the dog), but I'm almost out of the abx, and he's getting ready to go into the kennel for a few days (I've also been putting him on just before to just after he gets out of the kennel, because he always picks something up. I swear this dog has PANDAS/DANDAS (Puppy Autoimmune.... or Doggie Autoimmune...) Now I know why we adopted him...he fits in just perfectly to the family! Just a word of caution, though. You need to be careful how much abx you are giving the dog. It is calculated by weight. If your vet has a problem, PM me, and my vet may agree to talk to your vet. Because he TOTALLY gets it. Hopeny Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 How do you know if your dog has strep? We have a rescue, he contsantly licks the floor (and himself).
bulldog24 Posted May 25, 2012 Author Report Posted May 25, 2012 I had my dog swabbed under anesthesia. She had no symptoms at all. I did on a hunch. Its expensive but I am glad I did it
Hopeny Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 Wow I never thought about that. I was sort of thinking it would not hurt our dog to have a round of abx, he is a rescue (was told in a hoarding situatiom) and was then living in a foster family with 10 or so other dogs, half of which were other rescues. Is there a guide for augmentin by weight?
bulldog24 Posted May 25, 2012 Author Report Posted May 25, 2012 Well augmentin for dogs is called clavamox. Pm me if you need a dose calculated. It goes by weight I would suggest a shot of bicillin. Its cheaper no pill giving, and lasts for about 7-10 days. should take care of strep
