I have very mild TS, and am interested in taking suppliments to help control it. I have never taken any meds for it, so don't know what works and what doesn't. I did do some research on what suppliments to take, but it seems like alot since my tics are not severe. I am wondering what few suppliments I can start with to see if those help before adding ALL of them. Which ones seeem to work the best with controlling the tics. I do not have any OCD symptoms, just slight neck, mouth, finger twitches. I would like to take as little as possible.

Taurine is suppose to help with tics and seizures. My daughter takes Taurine (along with many others) but maybe you'd like to try that one.

Taurine is good..... but NOT A GOOD IDEA to take it without magnesium, and also, some people tic more with it!!

Hi Amanda

although I strongly feel that it is the specific blend of supplements that help people, yet if you are going to only add a few I would suggest a good multivitamin, high in the B vitamins(no colouring,or artificial flavours etc) along with extra calcium and magnesium in a 2:1 ratio, with zinc. Usually adults need 1000mg calcium:500mg magensium:50mg zinc

Magnesium has been found to be very important in helping to reduce tics. The best form of magnesium is the one that comes compounded with taurine as magnesium taurate, provided you arent sensitive to taurine

Omega essential fatty acids are also valuable, but be careful again as some people are sensitive to fishoil, even tho it is the best source of omega 3

if you are, then rather take flaxseed oil, or better yet a blend of flaxseed, borage and evening primrose (they come in single blended capsules)

That is a good point to start at I think

Thanks for the info. A few other questions now. How much is enough B vitamens? I am already getting enough Calcium, and almost zinc, so I'll add the magnesium taurate. Also, I am getting 250 mg of fish oils now, is that enough as well? Where do I find the specific amounts of what is recommended to help with TS?

Ok, I went and got the recommended amounts of suppliments. I went to a health food store and they did not have magnesium/tuarine mixed. I only got the magnesium I was nervous about trying the taurine since I have read it might increase the tics. Will magnesium help w/o taurine, if not is there something else I can try?

When I assesed my current vitamens and diet I am getting enought calcium (1400) and not enough in everything else. Magnesium only 100 mg, zinc 30 mg, and fatty acids 250 mg. I found the recommended fatty acids dose for me (a lactating mother) is betweeen 650 and 1000 mg per day. WOW! I didn't realize I was so defiecent in so many areas.

Thanks for your help. I am still curious about the taurine? Is it ok to take it seperate than magnesium? Or should I just leave it out for now and see if mag. alone helps?

I really appreciate the advice.

especially as you are still nursing your little one, it would be better for you not to use taurine at this time. Taurine is an amino acid and my personal feeling is you should not try that till you are no longer nursing your baby.

Magnesium alone is fine, as you are going to be having it with calcium...remember the 2:1 rule..TWO mg calcium for every ONE mg of magnesium.

Good that you are adding the omega EFAs too :)

I hope you are already also on a good multivitamin/mineral

I currently have been taking (about 2 years) Duet Prenatel vitamens with DHA (250 mg) THey have lots of good stuff in them, but not as much as recommendd, so I got the suppliments I needed. So, I should not use the Taurine while nursing? OK, good thing the store didn't have what I originally went looking for :) I'm doing 1400 Calcium (in prenatals) to 500 magnesium (suppliment). And 50 Zinc, suppliment. So, should I up the magnesium to make it = 2:1? or just leave it since I'm getting beyond what I need with Calcium, and exactly what I need with MAag?
