BoyIowa Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Went to see a DAN doctor last week. Suggested we add Methyl B12 to the mix. Ds hates needles, how are we going to give him a shot at home? DH doesn't like the idea of it. Will it help? A bit worried about the 1-2 weeks hyperness that it may bring in the beginning. Please let me know if anyone has used it - the good, the bad, the ugly.
demeter Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Our family just started the Methyl B12 shots as well. Someone had mentioned numbing cream for my dd whom had anxiety over having an injection. The needle is incredibly small and she had to ask if it was over! Not a big deal for her on the second go around. We put a small amount of the numbing cream (from a compounding pharmacy, prescription needed) on a bandaid, then wait 20 minutes. My ds has recently had a major exacerbation, including new tics and OCD. Unfortunately, we added several new things to his routine, B12, 5MTHF, and Prednisone. So, we are unable to decipher what caused the behavioral changes that came on so suddenly. I was going to post to see if others have had reactions to the B12 shot or Prednisone...heck he might just be getting sick. I too am interested in others feedback, as you put "it the good, the bad and the ugly"

Kiera Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 I did the B12 shots for my ds for the DAN protocol some years ago. It is given in insulin needles, which are very small, however he still didn't like it, so then I started giving it to him in the butt when he was asleep! He never woke up, usually just scratched his butt and rolled over, sometimes never even budged if he was in a deep sleep phase!
BoyIowa Posted January 9, 2012 Author Report Posted January 9, 2012 That is funny, good idea. I would consider that except that he usually sleeps flat on his back. We were given lidocaine for numbing before the shot. Did the Methtl B12 work for you? Did you get the 1-2 week hyperness? Any other advice?
aidansmom Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 It is funny that I was going to post a question about B12 also. We also give the B12 during sleep - if he was in a deep sleep he didn't budge during it. The problem is that some nights he doesn't sleep as soundly (or I didn't catch him in a sound sleep)then he seems more aware and flinches but it beats the anxiety that he would have with the needle if he was awake. If he seems not sound asleep and I want to get it done I do queitly tell him that he is going to feel a quick "prick". Another thing that I have been considering is doing B12 transdermally which the pharmacist says is not quite as efficient as injections but more efficient than orally. My question to anyone doing B12 - do you know the dose is and what form? My LLMD prescribed a dose that is way higher than the previous prescription that was written by a DAN doctor and I am concerned about giving too much. Does anyone know if there are concerns about taking too much B12? Thanks Elizabeth
Kiera Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 I can't remember the dose, it's been so long, but I think it was weight based. Don't remember any hyperness or even positive effect, but then my ds had lots of issues and we were trying a whole range of things at the same time, supplements, rotation diet, chelation etc. For the shot, you just have to divide the buttock in 4 and give in upper, outer buttock so it's accessable while lying on his back or by gently lifting the leg and rolling him slightly on his side. Where there is a will, there is a way!
PowPow Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 OK- so I am showing my ignorance, I am sure-- but are you able to use sublingual Methyl B12- our LLMD had our daughter take it whenever she felt an episode coming on- plus multiple times a day, regularly. It was a liquid- strawberry flavored, I think. It was relatively expensive, but it did seem to help, I think. Maybe if you have certain methylation issues- maybe injectable is the only way to go? Just thought I would ask.
Kiera Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 It can be taken many ways but the DAN Dr recommended the shots as that's supposedly the best way to maximize absorption I believe.
bulldog24 Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 You really cant over do b12. Your body takes what it needs and you urinate the rest. If it were my kiddo i would do it in theur sleep
dut Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Hi - we've been told that shots are best 'cos if you take it orally it only is available for 4 hours or so. If you do shots you get a smoother curve of availability. We get round that by doing it 4 times a day. There is no way that dd or ds would go for shots and they wake at the slightest touch or sound when asleep so we couldn't sneak it in either. We use a good quality sublingual 16000% of daily but I don't worry about quantity 'cos so much doesn't get absorbed and what does, that is too much, is flushed out when they pee. DD gets a squirt in the am, when she gets home from school, dinner time and before bed. Our ped says she's found one that claims availability for 12 hours but it's hydroxy and for now we're going with methyl but may change when we research more......
