cobbiemommy Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) We will be traveling to Dr B next month and need to know what airport to fly into and where is a good (read cheap) place to stay close to his office. For those of you who told me about another doc, I thank you, but we thought his approach might complement our LLMD's the best. Cobbie Edited January 4, 2012 by cobbiemommy

Bill Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 We will be traveling to Dr B next month and need to know what airport to fly into and where is a good (read cheap) place to stay close to his office. Cobbie I drive so not sure which airport would be best. Doubletree is the standard but was booked last time we went. Found a room at a place called The Amsterdam in nearby Stamford (just south of Dr. B.'s). It was more expensive than the WeCare rate provided by Doubletree but still much cheaper than most in the area. It might also be a little farther but I think the drive is easier. No pool but the room comes with a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, and super fast wifi connection. McD's not too far away in addition to other usual fast food within reason. Almost forgot, "continental" (as in really limited) breakfast is provided free. Not so at the Doubletree. The Amsterdam is older and rather drab in the hallways but I found the room to be every bit as nice as the Doubletree. I was so frazzled on the last trip, I did not even think to ask them if they had a special rate for medical related visits. If memory serves, $25/night more than the Doubletree's WeCare rate but I thought the included breakfast, refrigerator, and microwave more than made up for it. 9 Clarks Hill Avenue Stamford, CT 06902, United States +1 203-327-4300 stamfordamsterdam.com No bed bug reports for this hotel the last time I checked either. Good luck. bill

Tpotter gets a better rate online thru different hotels - you can pm her for details You could fly into: Westchester (NY), Hartford (CT) Laguardia, Newark, JFK, as this part of CT is just outside of NYC. It's about 1 1/2 hours from Hartford, but the NY airports (except Westchester, which is the closest), are kind of a pain to get in and out of, and take quite a while, as well.) We use Priceline.com, and name our own price. I typically try first for a 3 1/2 star hotel, and have gotten as low as $55.00 per night (last stay we got the Stamford Hilton). I've paid as much as $70 per night. I would start to bid a few weeks before, because the bidding is easier to get. If I don't get a 3/1 2 star for the money I want to spend, I go down to a 3 star. It's truly amazing what you can bid and get on Priceline. Alternatively, a mother I met the last time we were there (she may be reading this now, but hasn't posted), stays at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven. She says it is absolutely wonderful, and you meet incredibly nice people. $15 per night, you get your own room, but share a bathroom, and kitchen is fully stocked. But, New Haven is about 45 minutes north of Darien. If you are flying into Hartford, it may not be a bad option, but just remember that driving in from the north to his office is a pain in the neck during rush hour, because everyone is going into the City.
JAG10 Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I'm not sure if there is an update, but we were at DoubleTree 12/29. The WeCare rate was $84 or $86. As of Jan 1, it was going up to $129. The receptionist said Dr B needed to renew the WeCare contract. I mentioned that to the nurse at his office who said she would talk to him. Imnot sure if the $129 is the new rate or not because the regular rate weekday for the room was $169. Let's hope not. That is a $90 increase if you stay two nights.
3boysmom Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 They told us $110.!! We are booked there for the 15, 16 , & 17th.
tpotter Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 They told us $110.!! We are booked there for the 15, 16 , & 17th. Unless you are really wanting the Doubletree (which is a nice hotel), I've done much better on price...just as nice if not nicer at times, bidding my own price on Priceline.
JAG10 Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 They told us $110.!! We are booked there for the 15, 16 , & 17th. You can call them back and ask for Jade and say you were waiting for the physician to renew the contract.....or try priceline.
3boysmom Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 We are open to other places, but never extra time to shop around and it is nice to know what to expect as far as location and what's near.
3boysmom Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 They told my husband that, that was the new "care" price, but he is going to call them back. Thanks for the heads us "old friends". Will I see you there again tpotter?

Will I see you there again tpotter? My son is scheduled for IVIG #4 there on 16/17 but we just got the insurance denial letter today. We'll have to wait and see if we can get that reversed this week. (grumble grumble) bill
3boysmom Posted January 7, 2012 Report Posted January 7, 2012 We were denied many times, but the ladies in Dr. B's office kept pushing and it went to the top with Dr. And a peer review board. 8 weeks of fighting until they agreed to pay for 1 year. I hope they meant a year meaning 12 months and not calendar or we will not be covered either. Either way...we have a 10,000 deductable, that starts over each January, so this will be an expendive visit either way! Maybe we will see you... Our son is Hunter & he is 12. Best of lusk and prayers, Linda
