Stage 1 of detox is over

I am new at this. I have an 8 year old son who was diagnosed with tourettes and mild inattentive ADD last week. We have been in touch with a DAN doctor and we have been giving him 2 teaspoons of cod liver oil and vitamin supplements for about a month. He is also gluten and wheat free for 2 weeks) and dairy free (1 month) and free of arificial color and flavors for a month. My son's attention and focus has been somewhat better but tics are the same. I cannot seem to isolate what is causing the tics at some times but not others.

I want to know that I am on the right track and that I for sure need to do the full urine, blood and stool testing in order to figure out what supplemnts will be best. I am supposed to start a probiotic and glutithione after the testing (as well as krill oil which seem harder given the smell of the oil and enzymes- which will be a lot of trouble to give before every meal.) It would be great to hear from others who have followed this protocol and had success with DAN doctors. What seems to work the best?

Thanks,

Confused Mom

Hi Confused Mom and welcome :)

it is good that you are starting by optimising your son's diet etc.

The more you read and learn here, the less confused you will be!

Just do remember that, if his TS diagnosis is accurate, there is not necessarily always a definable trigger for the tics....yes, certain things DO trigger tics in people with TS and eliminating these triggers and optimizing the diet, environment etc is a very big help in minimizing tics, but for people with TS, there are often more subtle "internal" triggers, which may or may not be affected by diet, environment etc....the inherant nature of the waxing and waning of TS tics is something that is still somewhat of a mystery and sometimes one can be doing ALL the right things and still get a tic waxing phase! So dont become despondent. Just keep doing the good stuff and the overall result will be so beneficial compared with what would be if you werent.

I do just want to mention the fish oils.....they are excellent supplements, but, for reasons that still remain a mystery, many people with TS tics tic MORE when given their omega 3 via fish oils ( even if these people have no allergies to fish/seafood) In this case, it is best to obtain the omega 3 via FLAXSEED OIL, and best yet to take a combination of flaxseed and borage for omega 3 and evening primrose for omega 6

My son also has a TS ADD diagnosis and we honestly found that it was a combination of supplements and other treatments that truly brought his TS.ADD/OCD under control from very severe to very mild

here is a thread I started to detail this

you will also find many threads here that document what other people have done that has helped

all the best to you

Confused Mom,

>I want to know that I am on the right track and that I for sure need to do the full urine, blood and stool testing in order to figure out what supplements will be best.

I think this is something a lot of us struggle with, especially during times when the tics and other issues, really don't seem that bad. I guess every parent has to decide for themselves which route is best for their child.

Could I suggest that you read Giselle's posts, along with Chemar's. Just click on her name anywhere you see it, and it will give you a "read all messages," option. She has had remarkable success with improvement for her son, with the testing and DAN protocol.

I truly think the testing and a DAN Dr. is the best way to go if your son's condition warrants it. As with the fish oil and fatty acid metabolism, without testing, you kind of have to experiment. The same thing with management of yeast or bad bacteria, vitamin/minerals, overload of metals if present, etc.

The alternative Dr. I saw, wanted the stool test only, first. He felt that a big part of the problem could be solved with testing digestive function, yeast/bacteria, and fatty acid metabolism. He felt if there was a problem there, that could be corrected, the other tests may not be necessary. I wanted, more of what your Dr. is suggesting. :) I didn't want one test, then go back and discuss it, and order another, wait another 2 months, then go back. I knew the vitamins were working, and I wanted to check things out there first. I should have been more assertive, but I had been pretty beaten up by reg. Drs. and just didn't want to sound challenging with this Dr. and I did like him, and wanted to put this whole issue in someone else's hands. That wasn't meant to be in our case. Now he is retiring, but I have been told he is going to have a very small, part time practice, and he may keep us on as patients. Call the end of Feb. Why I wasn't informed of this, I'll never know.

I have heard good things about Krill. One of the biochat Dr.s said another Dr. in his office was having good results treating tics with Krill. I also read it stinks to high heaven, but doesn't have the fishy after taste of reg. fish oil, so maybe the trade off would be worth it?

Please let us know what you decide. The sharing of information here is invaluable. Without this message bd. I don't know where we'd be right now.

I am a big fan of DAN doctors but at this point I am not sure if all DAN doctors are equal. Since the success of the treatments came out I am concerned that some may be doctors who just jumped on the bandwagon but are not really knowlegable in the finer details. I would recommend researching any DAN doctor to see how long they have been doing it. With that said, DAN doctors from my experience are not cheap and the testing to pinpoint the issues in the body are not cheap as well. But with that said, they were worth every penny that we spent and our only regrett was that we spent money on other doctors first. When I have a chance I will post the tests in order that worked best for us with our treatment plan. But basically we tested for PANDAS, Delayed Food Allergies, And a Spectrum Test on Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids first.

I would now throw the OATs test for yeast or fungus in that group. I would not start anything without any testing but that was our choice.

Just wanted to add in a part about DAN doctors. To be considered a DAN doctor all they have to do is attend one DAN conference and then their name can go on the list of DAN doctors. Watch out for those types.
