Giselle
Found it interesting while we were in Australia (which has socialized medicine ie: the government, via their citizens taxes, has to pay for medical) that they removed flouride from their water as they found it to be harmful at worst and useless at best. Same with Canada - who also has socialized medicine. Hum? When it cost the government they took it out. Perhaps people here are making too much off the whole flouride system to take it out. kim
Power plants in the U.S. collectively emitted more than 90,000 pounds of mercury into the air in 2003. “The administration’s mercury rule recklessly exposes another generation of children to high levels of mercury pollution,” said U.S. PIRG Clean Air Advocate Supryia Ray. “We commend Senators Leahy, Collins, Snowe, and Jeffords for taking action to reduce mercury pollution in this decade, instead of decades from now.” http://uspirg.org/uspirg.asp?id2=18999
Andy
The University of Texas came out with the results of a study last spring and it found that the closer a neighborhood was to a coal burning power plant the more kids in that neighborhood was labed as needing special education services. They also found higher levels of mercury in the soil in the neighborhoods that were closer to the power plants. Did not get any real play in the major media. kim
http://www.newstarget.com/011401.html The FDA Exposed: An Interview With Dr. David Graham, the Vioxx Whistleblower When my former Pediatric Neurologist asked me if I thought they were trying to cover up a cure for tics using vitamins, I really didn't feel that way, I was only frustrated that it appeared to work so well and all I was getting was resistance and insulted, instead of guidance. Now, let's just say, I'm reconsidering. If these are the people that we have to look to for PROVEN treatments, I'll take anecidotal anyday. Anyway, are we supposed to believe the Dr.s who oppose these alternative treatments, or our own eyes?
kim
PLEASE FORWARD FAR AND WIDE!!!! Ellen ********************** ACTION ALERT!!!!!!!!! THIMEROSAL LEGISLATION (S2801) HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY!!!!! CO-SPONSORS NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Senator Ciesla of the 10th Legislative District has introduced S2801 in the NJ State Senate. S2801 provides for a ban of the use of the preservative thimerosal, a 50% ethylmercury based preservative by weight, here in the State of New Jersey. This legislation, as introduced, is the most aggressive legislation so far in the US as it provides for a total phasing out of the use of the preservative in all vaccines, including the flu vaccine, for children and adults in NJ by 2009. Under the legislation, the administration of vaccines containing mercury would be phased out as follows: • Beginning January 1, 2007, health care providers would be prohibited from administering influenza vaccines containing more than 0.5 micrograms of mercury per 0.25 milliliter dose to a child under three years of age or 1.0 microgram of mercury per 0.5 milliliter dose to a person over three years of age, and any other vaccine that contains more than a trace amount of mercury; • Beginning January 1, 2008, health care providers would be prohibited from administering to any person a vaccine that contains more than a trace amount of mercury; • Beginning January 1, 2009 health care providers would be prohibited from administering to any person a vaccine that contains any amount of mercury. Assemblymen Wolfe and Holpfzapel are planning on introducing corresponding legislation in the Assembly when they re-convene later this Fall. Please contact your State Senators and ask them to co-sponsor S2801. Also, please contact your Assemblymen and ask them to support the Assembly version of S2801 once it is introduced. kim
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 - The government is investigating five reports of teenagers who came down with a serious neurological disorder after receiving a new vaccine against meningitis. Doctors don't yet know whether the cases of Guillain Barre syndrome are related to the shot, called Menactra, or are coincidence, the Food and Drug Administration emphasized Friday. kim
http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/news/050928a.asp Stop Medicating your ADHD child Excerpt: Excitotoxins cause nerve cells to be hyper, damaged, or they may even kill brain cells. Although often called MSG or glutamate, dozens of food additives have these toxins. And those additives have stealth names that hide their toxicity, such as aspartame, flavoring, hydrolyzed protein, broth, and soy protein isolate. In practice, that means avoiding the majority of grocery items such as box mixes, prepared soups, flavored chips, and canned tuna. But healthy choices, such as canned tuna that has only tuna and water, or another that has the ingredients tuna, olive oil, and salt. "ADHD kids, in particular, when they're exposed to monosodium glutamate or one of the excitotoxins in food, it really throws them out of kilter -- they become excessively hyperactive," Blaylock explained. A related no-no for the ADHD brain is sugar. Sugar, strangely enough, can actually bring on abnormally low sugar levels in the blood. And that increases glutamate release in the brain, yet another excitotoxic cause of hyperactivity. *****This article contains some good information, but I have to question the wisdom of the canned tuna statement. I don't think the author of this article is up on the mercury issues. Talk about a NEUROTOXIN. Kim

Also FDA recent warning. http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/showthread.php?t=103111 ***********************ALSO******************************** Curr Treat Options Neurol. 2005 May;7(3):183-189. Related Articles, Links Gluten Ataxia and Post-Streptococcal Central Nervous System Syndromes: Emerging Immune-mediated Disorders of the Central Nervous System? Wills A, Dale R, Giovannoni G. Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London WC1 3BG, United Kingdom. G.Giovannoni@ion.ucl.ac.uk. There is an "emerging concept" that central nervous system dysfunction can be caused by an aberrant immune response triggered by exogenous antigens such as the food allergen gluten or streptococcal infection. The hypothesis of a gluten sensitive ataxia remains unproven, but is worthy of consideration. The data in support of this hypothesis require critical review before any treatment recommendations can be formulated. The idea that anti-gliadin antibody seropositivity per se justifies the term "gluten sensitivity" is important because it offers potential therapeutic possibilities, including simple exclusion diets, for patients with anti-gliadin antibody-associated ataxia. Post-streptococcal basal ganglia dysfunction has various manifestations, all of which fall into a relatively well-defined symptom complex or syndrome. Anti- basal ganglia antibodies that are associated with serologic evidence of recent streptococcal infection are a potential diagnostic marker for this group of disorders, which includes Sydenham's chorea (SC) as the prototype. More recently subjects with pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection, Tourette's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other movement disorders have been described in association with anti-basal ganglia antibodies. The apparent overlap between the clinical phenotype of SC, pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections, Tourette's syndrome, and obsessive- compulsive disorder suggests that they may represent one disease entity. The current working hypothesis is that antibodies induced in response to streptococcal infection cross-react with antigenic determinants in the basal ganglia resulting in basal ganglia dysfunction. Although the experimental evidence is incomplete, there is sufficient evidence to support immune-mediated basal ganglia dysfunction as an emerging clinical entity. This has important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of subjects with these disorders. The latter includes the judicious use of antibiotic prophylaxis and immunomodulatory therapies. Apart from the diagnosis and management of SC, no consensus exists regarding the diagnosis and management of the other clinical entities within this group of disorders.
