sf_mom Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) As you may know... Our twins have extremely high Coxsackie titers. However they have never had any symptoms directly attributed to it until this past weekend. DD was a little on the crabby side and accidentally, I noticed she has about 8 mouth sores on the back of her tongue and near her tonsils. We stepped up the anti-viral protocol 3 weeks ago so it makes sense that she would be expressing the virus. She is not complaining about mouth sores and I am treating her with colloidal silver mouth spray that seems to be helping. But I also understand the mouth sores means its potentially contagious. Older DS started with a severe headache last night around dinner. Advil seemed to resolve the complaint. Then he woke in the middle of the night with a 103 fever, body aches and unable to sleep. He has been up for hours. This morning he seems better, temp is normal with Advil and we have no increase in prior symptoms. I am keeping him home from school today to see if fever spikes again. He is 30 days from last rotation of antibiotics when we started rifampin......... Lyme typically flairs between days 28 to 34. He has flaired with one day fever on day 32 previously. So, what is your opinion herx or new exposure? I am not calling the Dr. in a panic yet. -Wendy Edited April 13, 2011 by SF Mom
sptcmom Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) Lets reason it out: Wendy you already know all this but it helps to brainstorm so here goes: is this similar to other cycling symptoms? I know the fever is but the body aches? herxes would usually be most symptoms he's experienced before. Exposure would be new sttuff getting added on. herx would also have some tiredness involved ad would be like a Bell curve comes on, goes up, and then starts to drop symptoms and get better. If its a true herx you would see some gains after its over. If its a exposure you would see sustained regression. If its a combo both you will see back to before herx began status with no gains and possible one step backslde in some fragile children. Fever disappearing with advil is not really any info. If fever is resolved on its own, its useful info and he's truly fever free. Fever in itself is a good and normal immune response.Fever resolving on its own with no antipyretics given then its a herx. Again typically a low grade fever upto 102 is considered viral. Any bacterial (Lyme) fever would be higher grade but he's at 103 which is borderline high so not a firm diagnostic sign. Mouth sores would be contagious. try using those travel finger toothbrushes for her until it subsides. Throw away the old toothbrush. I would use Notatum Quentans spray on the sores. Its a nose spray which can be used in the mouth as antimicrobial. Also painting the sores with turmeric and olive oil (EVOO)will have good drying effect- doesn't burn. All above info is personal exprience for me too Wendy, so quite reliable. By any chance are you using milk thistle on Ds older? Gotta run now but happy to continue discussion anytime.will keep checking in. Jodie Edited April 13, 2011 by sptcmom
philamom Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Wendy- I don't really have anything to add, just wanted to send a big hug your way!!! I hope it is just a herx...and short-lived!
sf_mom Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks Jodie that helps a lot!!!!!!!!!! He has had body aches with Herx previously. He actually seems the best I've seen him since beginning of Jan. this morning which is just crazy. I am worried its the calm before the storm. Fever appears to have resolved and no more headache. Still giving Advil regularly though so hard to say. I have them all in epsom salt bath. Nobody sick from his class at school 'talked to school nurse'. Nobody running fever in family. For the last three days I've noticed a little flair of symptoms early evening that resolve on their own. So far it seems very similar to the one day fever/vomiting we had day 32 post a rotation previously but suspect I'll have to wait a few days to figure it all out. Good idea on the toothbrushes.... Didn't think about switching. Purchasing Notatum Quentans now. Older DS is on Munidpur, Burbur, Olive Leaf Extract, A-Bart, Bentonite Clay plus Antibiotics. No Milk thistle. -Wendy
sf_mom Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks for the hug.... it very lonely in the middle of the night with a sick son who won't sleep. Climbed a mountain of worry last night. -Wendy
laure Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Right there with you Wendy...up at 4:30AM in my house (no good reason, just worry too much to sleep). Drink green tea, I'll drink green tea, it'll be like we're having a cup together. We will all get better, just has to happen with all this good karma. Laura
sf_mom Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) Thanks Laura. I'm don't usually come unglued with worry but fevers do scare the heck out of me. My mind automatically jumps to fevers = regressions. I back to 'nesting' close to my kids today with an inability to get anything done today. Still in PJs unshowered. -Wendy Edited April 13, 2011 by SF Mom
sptcmom Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 ok, so its not a rifampin v/s milk thistle interaction. good. Sounds like a herx. so far. and yes, you will have to wait for the peak and then the resolution of it to decide what it really is. Fever resolving is a good sign. Fevers in itself are considered a good warning sign. Flu like symptoms as we know are a herx. some kids don't get the entire gamut of flu symptoms. If symtoms add on do call Dr Harris, esp if new ones add on. Here anytime you need me. Jodie
mama2alex Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Don't have any advice to add - just thinking of you. Sounds like he's past the worst of it and you'll figure out what was going on in hindsight. Hugs!
sf_mom Posted April 14, 2011 Author Report Posted April 14, 2011 Thought I'd update: Older DS continued with a fever yesterday. 100.35 while alternating Advil and Tylenol. Slept through the night and fever seems to have resolved but he still has a headache/stomach ache. He says stomach ache is better with Advil this morning and is going to school. So far there is no increase in his Lyme/PANDAS symptoms (they actually seem better) but I still think that could change over the next few days. -Wendy

I have had you in my thoughts.I forgot to mention that for aches and pains that are specific- headache, rib pain etc, I use Klinghardt cold laser therapy for DS and that works well if stared immediately and takes a few days longer if started late. I wish the Academy people would be able to set up a practitioner database sooner. The director insists that all clinicians need to clear the certification testng before they even start. I haven't found a 'Frisco clinician yet. If you need anything call me. Jodie
sf_mom Posted April 16, 2011 Author Report Posted April 16, 2011 Thanks again Jodie... older DS is better. No fever and no stomach ache this morning! No increase in Lyme symptoms... just a little bit better actually. Younger DD mouth sores are improving with current Sovereign Silver spray but not gone. No one else is sick or appears to be getting sick. Very scary but gaining confidence everyone will be o.k. -Wendy
sf_mom Posted April 29, 2011 Author Report Posted April 29, 2011 (edited) I thought I'd update everyone on our LLMDs perspective on the high temp and set of events during this timeframe. As a reminder, we started to see a slight increase in DS symptoms on day 28 from last rotation of antibiotic, day 30 he had a high fever of 103+, day 31 we managed fever with advil, day 32 he was very tired, day 33 he had stomach complaints, day 34 he had diarrhea and then he seemed better. Our Dr. felt DS symptoms initially started out as a herx that then escalated into a bad response to the Rifampin (the last antibiotic that was added to rotation). That was something I wasn't expecting to hear. Anyway, last Thursday DS was taken off Rifampin and rotated to Biaxin. We noticed a little herx over the weekend and again are on a path of improvement. I can already tell the Biaxin is much better antibiotic for him. Who would have thought it was the antibiotic that was the issue. -Wendy Edited April 29, 2011 by SF Mom
