Nick231 Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 Has anyone had any results with 5HTP for tics? I've read some good things about it relating to state of mind and one article that said it might help tics, but isn't it rather stimulating, rather like St.John's Wort is supposed to be - with the tics, I mean? Any ideas? Nick
Chemar Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 Hi Nick my son was on 5HTP to help elevate his seratonin levels in order to combat severe OCD and depression. The overall effect for him was good, and as he was less anxious/depressed/OCDish, his stress levels went down and so that also helped his tics. i have never personally come accross anything directly linking 5HTP to either an increase or decrease in tics HOWEVER for some people, 5HTP doesnt relax them as it did my son (helped him sleep better too) For example when my husband tried it, it made him very edgy, and I have heard this from some other people too So once again it seems to be very much dependent on individual metabolism as to how helpful 5HTP may or may not be. A WORD OF CAUTION....DO NOT USE 5HTP IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER MEDS OR SUPPS THAT ARE KNOWN TO ELEVATE SERATONIN AS THIS CAN HAVE A DANGEROUS INTERACTION. It is always a good idea to use supplements under advisement from a qualified physician Has anyone had any results with 5HTP for tics?I've read some good things about it relating to state of mind and one article that said it might help tics, but isn't it rather stimulating, rather like St.John's Wort is supposed to be - with the tics, I mean? Nick231 Posted June 14, 2005 Author Report Posted June 14, 2005 Thanks again Chemar. It's interesting that your husband was a bit edgy with 5HTP. I've also seen stuff that says it can make one a bit jittery. I was just curious about it in relation to tics - mine are so severe - but it was in an obscure (I think) article that I read about it actually decreasing tics. Having said that, it can, as you say, often be a vicious circle with the tics - stressing over them making them even worse - so anything that can, at least help eliminate some anxiety can only be a good thing. I might try it at some stage, but for now will probably start with diet and the other supplements you mentioned. N
flower Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 I am currently taking 15g of Inositol and want to add 5HTP (in addition to Magnesium, Calcium, OPC-3, etc etc that I am taking). What is the proper dosage for it? I am in my late 30s, 120 pounds. Advice would be appreciated.
Chemar Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 it is generally recommended that one should start at the minimum dose of 50mg 5HTP taken in the evening You are already taking a very high dose of inositol (500mg per day is generally what is used) so definitely start low on 5HTP and if required move up..............may also be a good idea to take the inositol at the start of the day and the 5HTP at the end.
flower Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 Thank you very much, Chemar! Will start with 50mg per your suggestion.
flower Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Has anyone who's taken 5-HTP had problems such as their skin getting itchy? I've had eczema (on and off in the past) so I may just be having that again but it's suddenly gotten bad in the past week. I may stop 5-HTP to see if that'll make a difference but then it could also be Taurine and L-Carnitine that I've started taking too...??? If anyone has any thoughts/experience, I would like to hear. Thank you.
