MIAS_MOM Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 When my dd gets a strep infection, we cringed, because we know its the beggining of a month worth of strep. No matter what antiobiotic she is put on, she will have one good week without any symptoms, then boom ! It's back for the second round, and is much more aggresive this go. Has anyone elses child been in this same situation? Does anyone have any idea why we get 2 back to back, EVERY time?
KaraM Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 We had this happen when my daughter was in either pre-school or Kindergarten (she's in 3rd grade now). This was all Pre-PANDAS (or maybe it was the beginning and it just wasn't obvious enough for us to catch it then). However, I blame the relapse on myself...I administered the abx incorrectly. My son had just had the same medicine, but one time a day for ten days. Her's was supposed to be 2x/day for five days (or something like that). I was only giving it once and on day 4 realized I had a ton left. So I just kept going as if it was supposed to be one time a day for 10 days. She seemed fine, so I thought we were ok. Then a few weeks later, fever, headache, stomache and positive throat culture. Back on abx. So, first, make sure you are giving the abx correctly. (you probably are, but just in case...) Then, maybe she needs a stronger or longer course than the typcial child...
MIAS_MOM Posted March 31, 2011 Author Report Posted March 31, 2011 My younger dd and her PANDAS sister always gets strep at the same time. Younger daughter is always on the same dose, same medication, and always gets over hers without any problems. My pandas dd has had strep over 10 times in 2 years, and yes I am giving the medication correclty.
SSS Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Sounds like a lot of strep- 10x in 2 years. Have they mentioned getting tonsils out? Just curious. Doesn't sound like you are on prophylatic/or daily antibiotics? That might help keep it at bay... or flush out a lingering infection.

Yes, They removed her tonsils and adnoids about a yr ago, hasnt made any diff. No, unfortunatly, we are not on long term antibiotics. We dont have a PANDAS Doc in our State and our drs. that have been treating her do not understand enough to prescribe the antibiotics. We are going to All Childrens Hospital in June !!!!! Looking for big help there ! Our drs. have realized that after over 2 years of PANDAS with NO improvement, that we need bigger help ! ThankGod!
PhillyPA Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 My DS6 always got strep two times in a row and then he would have a hoarse voice for a month after. Why his pediatrician would always start with amoxicillian and then when he got it again gave him augmentin I will never know. You would think he would just go right for the augmentin after so much strep. I took him to the ENT (before pandas diagnosis) and he said that all of the strep makes the larynx enflamed and his voice will eventually go back to normal. Well, it seemed abnormal most of the time since he got strep so much. He barely had a voice. He always sounded like someone who was screaming at a concert the night before. When he got pandas and started treatment with a daily antibiotic, his voice was never hoarse again.
EAMom Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Have you touched bases with Dedee? She is in the Nashville area. Maybe she could give you some info. re docs. http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=13079 Also, have you been changing toothbrushes/toothpaste a few days into starting antibiotics? Also, don't let kids share toothpaste. I guess the big question is if the strep not clearing, or is it clearing and your dd is getting quickly reinfected (from someone, or something)?

Our Peds, who do not treat her for PANDAS, or understand it, but do believe it, are the ones to treat her for strep, I never thought of having her start on a higher dose antibiotic, but that makes perfect sense, I will def. bring this up to the peds when we geat our next strep. Very helpful ! If we could just "know everything" we might not miss the "obvious!" Great tip! Thanks, mucho!
