Guest Guest_efgh
Just wanted to ask the parents of asthmatic children if their asthma symptoms have worsened this month. My son who was doing so well with regard to his asthma suddenly had a big flare up of his symptoms and has been coughing very badly for the past 2 weeks. I have started off with the inhalers which I was avoiding for a long time. Was wondering if this was due to the "spring season" or due to his "larger intake of cheese, pizza etc" ... when I was about to think that his tics are improving, his asthma worsens. Bringing up our kids seems to be a BIG challenge!! Jean, I remember you mentioning that your son too is asthmatic. Your inputs on the above would be useful. How are your son's tics these days? Do you let him have dairy/watch TV etc? By the way, when is your son due for his DT vaccination? What is your/your doctor's view on that? thanks in advance. Spring
Hi Efgh, Sorry to hear about your son’s asthma. My son’s asthma is under control. In fact, he’s been off his asthma and allergy meds since last year. On the other hand, he still has noticeable tics (although they're almost gone last year for 4 months). That led us to take him to see a new DAN doctor this year. As I posted on the other threads, in February, his blood test showed that he has heavy metals (mercury, cadmium and antimony). He’s currently on “natural chelation†process (using supplements). During this time period, he almost reacted to each single new supplement that he’s taking. In order to avoid confusion, I have not re-introduce dairy and TV at this moment. Regarding your son’s asthma, I suspect it could be triggered by allergy due to the season. I don’t remember if your son has environmental allergy. If so, besides food restriction, you may want to check your home environment. Hyper filter helps for my son. He’s also taking Quercetone from Thorne for his allergy. Jean
kim
I just finished reading in Doris Rapps book, Is This Your Child, "Candida therapy has also led to improvement in some patients' typical asthma, eczema, hives, and hay fever, as well as the other symptoms listed in Table 23.1. She also says that asthma a lot of times will dissapear after puberty in boys. I was glad to finally read some good news for boys! Kim
Guest Guest_efgh
thanks Kim that really is encouraging. Lets hope I belong to that lucky few! Does the book "is this your child" talk about asthma too?? I thought its more to do with ADHD, tics etc.. Do your kids have asthma? thanks again ! kim
efgh, That book talks about EVERYTHING. However, I'm not as fascinated as I would have been before joining this website and the internet searching, because I have heard of a lot of it before. I have just been randomly reading sections, so I'm sure there is a lot there I don't know too. It has reinforced my idea that food intolerance can contribute to many symptoms. I just wish I had the option of food elimination with youngest, as he's my main concern at the moment. If I eliminate milk, I'll have to feed him suckers and cotton candy all day (this boy likes his corn sweetners-straight up) as sugar and dairy are about all he eats. My sons don't have asthma that I know of, but when 12 year old was younger and he would be checked for the various respiratory viruses/infections, they would ask me if he had asthma. Apparently, when he had a virus, his chest would sound like a person with asthma might. This would usually only happen about once a year, during one of the really bad viruses. They would give him a breathing treatment and that would be the end of the asthma question until the following winter, and then they'd ask again. I have not looked at anything on the extra dose of polio, have you? So many things to work on! Kim
susanna
My son's asthma is pretty much under control, however he is having a HORRIBLE time with his allergies...congestion, red, itchy eyes, etc. He's been suffereing for a few weeks now....It's never been this bad. Spring and Fall are his usual bad times for asthma, but not this year. We've had to use his inhaler only once. He only has some mild facial tics these days...probably a combination of the seasonal allergies and "cheating" on bread and dairy.
Ronnas
My son has always been a spring allergie/asthma kid (fall is a tough time also)...although he has grown out of his asthma for the most part I do find that his food sensitivities are worse in the spring and he does tic more in the spring. I have read that food allergies can be worse when combined with environmental allergies. Although Kurt has had a waxing of symptoms this spring they are still the best they have been in 4 years. I think the combination of building his immune system, supplements, diet changes etc have helped over the years in healing his body. quan_daniel
Ronnas, with your child waxing periods this spring.. what would the frequency of his tic be..60 per days.. and compare that to 4 years ago...100 per days.. This is just some tradeoff I want to think about in terms of this new diet.. It sounds it improves his health by 80%? I am a programmer..sorry for the annalytical mind.. thanks daniel

Ronnas
Hi Daniel, HMMM...tough question. OK when I think in terms of food sensitivities and spring allergies...there is no doubt the food sensitivities are worse in the spring...by how much compared to 4 years ago is tough. You know the years start to mesh together and it is hard to remember exactly what tic happened when and how bad was this year...compared to another year. Overall I would say seasonal allergies make his food allergies about 60% worse. In terms of percentages I would say just removing dairy alone has helped about 80%. As far as number of tics go...well I can't say I have ever really counted or paid that much attention. Overall I just have more of a "feeling" as to how he is doing overall. As I have said before I don't find his tics all that bothersome but it's more of the co-morbid stuff that pops up such as separation anxiety (that is fighting over whether to go to school or not), anger, impatience etc, more bad decisions etc. As far as just spring allergies go I would say he regresses about 50% which is manageable. My son is a PANDAS guy and he had a major exposure to strep last week from his cousin and in the last 2 days he has begun to deteriorate alot so it is back on clindamycin tonight...compared to 4 years ago I would say he is still much, much better in a big way but it is still disconcerting. I attribute this improvement to the diet and supplements but that alone is not enough for his body to handle the exposure to strep. My general feeling is that as he gets older he will handle illnesses better especially strep. During the "waning" times when things are going well my son can be pretty much tic free. With seasonal allergies I guess if I had to put a # on it I would say his tics are in the range of 100 per day...even this is virtually unnoticeable by anyone but me b/c they vary...then with a strep illness or it seems even exposure to it...he can tic TONS...and at that point he will always have a vocal tic...the funny thing is...his motor tics have ALWAYS varied but he has had the same vocal tic for 4 years when it is there...I must say I am quite tired of this tic...it's a HMMM sound... Keep in mind that my son does not seem to notice his tics and really does not mention them...when they were severe and he was hospitalized and went through the biopsies and testing he was age 5 and 6 (he is now 9). He does not seem to remember much of it. He is in grade 2 and no classmates have teased him, and only the people close to him really notice them. To be honest I am not sure if my son even knows what the word "tic" means, he for sure does not know what PANDAS is and only knows that he has some "allergies" to some foods...the easy part for us has been that my son does not feel that his diet is restricted b/c he will literally eat anything I give him...he has never liked "junky" stuff and right from the age of 5 on my first try he could swallow vitamins etc...at this point he can swallow 4 at a time. I would say his biggest challenge by far is that he has a learning disability and finds reading very difficult and he DESPERATELY wants to read chapter books by himself and is not able to. I am not sure if this helps...it's hard to get across in a post how TS/PANDAS has impacted my son...for some it may seem like alot...for others whose children are more severe it may seem like very little...the interpretation of it is all a bit individual. Guest daniel quan
Ronnas, Thanks for your great reply. Have your child been tested for Yeast overgrowth and treated with? Food diet elimation is great. My questioning is , that yeast overgrowth does cause food allergy. Yeast overgrowth also causes a lot of immune system weakness. Allowing your child probably to get strep again and again. Did he get a lot of antiobiotic for strep. I know strep is a bateria? Thanks for your reply, THanks for your and others help, daniel
kim
Daniel, Ronnas Ronna I know you are the resident PANDAS expert, I was wondering iff PANDAS is ever a gradual onset. I read your extensive thread some time ago on Braintalk about the titers testing for PANDAS. My kids both had lots of streph when they were younger. Oldest son just had it a month ago, although since he had his tonsils out and has gotten older, he doesn't get it nearly as often. Younger, I was told is probably a carrier, since he has been in several times with a mildly red throat but culture comes back positive. He had a bunch of white spots and same symptoms as his brother when brother had streph, yet tested negative twice just recently. Just wondering. Daniel, I was told that two of the main things someones's DAN Dr. looked for on the Great Plains Oat test is yeast and I think gluthathione-don't think I spelled that right, and these things can give an indication if metals may be present? Just wondering what Dr. reviewed those results with you and if this was mentioned at all. Both of my boys have an appt. with an allergist their Pediatrician referred us to. Oldest son had Environ. testing when he was about 8. Positive to mold, cat, corn pollen, cottonwood. Foods were never mentioned. Does anyone think regular allergy testing for foods is worth doing? Hate to put them through it if we will just end up needing the blood testing through the speciality labs anyway. Does anyone have experience here? Daniel, I still think high B6 if you were'nt supplementing could mean he is unable to convert to P5P and may do well with supplementing with that. You may want to ask some of the people here who have more experience with these tests if that is something for you to discuss with DR. since this is just my impression. I had a high B6 on oldest sons blood work and suspect this for him too, however he is on Bonnies Vit. doing very well, and I don't want to add/change anything until we have a different Dr. Phyl posted a suggestion regarding Great Plains Oat test so maybe she could help. I'm going to send you a link for an interview with Dr. Walsh from Pfeiffer, this is discussed in that article. Kim
quan_daniel
Kim, Both Yeast and glutathione (spelling?) were an issue.. Infact Great Plain Lab..recommeds 'reduced glutathione ' supplement.. This supplement is also in Bonnie's TS pLUS.. However I don't believe this has to do with metal but rather a defficiency in mineral. I am not suggesting he has no metal problem, I am hoping he has no problem.. Glutathtione is 3 amino acids.. ----------------------------------- The presence of glutathione is required to maintain the normal function of the immune system. It is known to play a critical role in the multiplication of lymphocytes (the cells that mediate specific immunity) which occurs in the development of an effective immune response. Furthermore, the cells of the immune system produce many oxiradicals as a result of their normal functioning, resulting in a need for higher concentrations of antioxidants than most cells. Glutathione plays a crucial role in fulfilling this requirement. http://www.prozactruth.com/gluta.htm from Bonnie's website.. ---- Long term magnesium therapy should be combined with its synergistic components in my opinion. Taurine helps the uptake of magnesium into the cells and magnesium taurate has been found to provide long lasting protection from magnesium deficient conditions. Zinc is needed to be taken with magnesium so that a deficiency in zinc didn’t occur. Also zinc is needed to activate vitamin B6. Selenium is needed with glutathione for its activation...... Selenium is a trace mineral that is essential to good health but required only in small amounts [1,2]. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, which are important antioxidant enzymes
