philamom Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 My daughter started with an increase of anxiety, some seperation anxiety, age regression (fixated potty talk) this week. It's different than her usual increase symptoms of oppositional behavior, hyperness & figitiness, when she flairs with vit/supplements/exposure. On Sunday night (or Monday night -can't remember) she complained of a very minor sore throat (gave her some throat spray). It didn't look that red/sore. Next morning, she complained of minor stomach pain, but still was able to go to school. Her stools have been loose this week, but I ran out of her usual probiotic and been supplementing with one she has taken before. She is now asking to stay home from school or be picked up early. We had a good talk yesterday and this morning about her ocd (something we couldn't do before) and she mentioned her ocd is not increasing, just her worries. She say's it's been about a week. We had our follow up with with Dr. J on the 17th and she was great. She said it started after we returned home. So I am thinking of taking her to her ped today and getting a throat culture done. If she has strep, will she get a negative culture anyway, because of all the abx she's on? She's currently taking Amox 1000mg, Zith 250 mg, Minocin 50mg, and Tindamax on weekends. thanks in advance!
sf_mom Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 So, it could be one of three things: new bacterial infection (myco, strep, staph), new virus or herx. Right now its hard to probably say for certain. Where is she in her treatment cycle? How many days from her last regimen rotation and does it align with any cycle of flair i.e. 28 to 32 days or 56 to 64 days, etc. Was she exposed to anything additional at school that you are aware of currently? Any white spots in her throat? Does the current antibiotics cover her for strep per your LLMD? Maybe a slight rotation would serve her well that is more directed towards strep? Anyway: We are currently problem solving the new rash with our LLMD and we will immediately rotate to something that treats strep more aggressively if its looking like Impetigo. So far it appears to be more viral or a herx but I won't know for another couple of days. No flair in other symptoms just rash for us. When new exposures have happened to others there is an obvious regression typically for more than a week and ART was helpful in picking up 'WHAT' the infection was/is...... I can't remember if you have access to ART? Hope that can help you sort it out a little, if strep has been predominate in the past, I do not think it hurts to have her culture to see if anything comes back positive.
momofgirls Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Hi Melinda, Sorry to hear you guys have hit a bump. I think it is a good idea to check in with the pediatrician but also maybe call Dr. J's office and let them know you are concerned about possible strep exposure. Maybe a temporary increase in the amox or a switch to augmentin for a while would do the trick. Just an idea. It's so hard to know what is going on sometimes. His office is open untill noon on Saturday so you could try them in morning. His nurse might be able to run this past him and call something in over the phone. Hope things get better soon. Kim
philamom Posted January 29, 2011 Author Report Posted January 29, 2011 The rapid was negative. Kim- I called Dr. J's office this morning and they said to call back if it was negative and things don't settle in a few days...they would make a temporary adjustment to abx. So yes, great idea. Wendy- No new abx rotation. Her last addition of abx (Minocin) was Dec. 10th. We just recently saw Dr. J, and he felt she should continue on the same regime since it was working so well. I haven't really noticed any cycles--maybe I should start tracking symptom flairs. No access to ART here. Here are some recent changes that may be the reason for the increase?: -They switched the desks around in her classroom a week ago. There are four groups of 5. So she is now sitting with 4 new students. Is it possible one of the students could be a strep carrier, and now that she is sitting next to them every day she can't fight the constant exposure? -She recently used a sonicare electric tooth brush she received as a xmas present. Used it twice, before a lightbulb popped in my head, reminding me of her recent flair from the dentist cleaning. Is it possible that could have triggered something? What was I thinking when I bought it...it is a lot powerful than the battery operated ones from the drug store. -Her babysitter took her to a indoor play area (slides, moon bouces) on Sunday. She said the place was packed with a lot of youngster's. Maybe she's reacting to something viral. But like I said before, this feels different than her usual flair to exposure, supplements, exc. I hope we're not regressing! Tonight, she even started fixating on an activity that she used to harp on eight months ago. Uggh. I'm still keeping my finger's crossed this is just a reaction to something though! Tomorrow's the Tindamax...should make for an extra long weekend.
sf_mom Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) So glad you called Dr. J. Hopefully the tindamax will go after 'whatever' and pull her out of the funk without a rotation. Keep us posted. By they way, I think we've all seen these setbacks within a range of the current recovery. Are you doing any anti-viral regimen? I think you might have started DD on SyImmune.. If so, I would give her three pills per day until she pulls out of this. -Wendy Edited January 29, 2011 by SF Mom
sptcmom Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) Melinda Can you increase antimicrobial herbs and detox plus drainage? For example increase A-Bart from 5 to 10 drops and the same for Burbur, Parsley if you're doing those. If not you need to add some additional immune plus antimicrobials. Based on the circumstances you point out- play area, new kids- sounds like exposure to me. I have DS wear a mask during group work, and he has strategic seating in class to minimize exposure. I tend to go overboard with preventative stuff in general so this situation has me totally obsessed. His school nurse agrees with all the precautions in place, so thats a redemption.I restrict a lot of activities and avoid crowded places, birthday parties etc. DS and I have an agreement for 3rd grade to be bland so he can have more freedom in 4th grade. The powerful toothbrush is a big clue and yes too powerful for a child. If this feels different to you I feel you might be dealing with more than one exposure to more than one microbe- strep and myco are pretty common in this season. Yeast is another possibility. Im sorry I don't remember your entire situation in detail.Has she been screened for yeast? If any of her supllements are killing the yeast or any particular supplement can be moving metals and that can cause a huge flare. I wish I could call you to problem solve. Syimmune is a great idea and as is SyInfect for any active infections. Also exposures further decrease the PH in the body. Alkaline water helps meds and supplements penetrate deeper into the cells- alkaline water, Fiji water, Eternal springs water all have a Ph of 7.8 or higher. Coconut water- pure, no sugar added is phenomenal for hydration. Electrolytes are present in above waters I mentioned but Dr kling's matrix electrolyte water is awesome. Bottomline keep her more hydrated than usual. Jodie Edited January 29, 2011 by sptcmom
philamom Posted January 29, 2011 Author Report Posted January 29, 2011 Wendy- I did purchase the Sy Immune, but as with most vitamins /supplements, she reacted and I stopped giving it. I know--I need to push forward. That was a few weeks back. So I've been taking it instead. Jodie- I give her 15 drops am/pm of Burber and probiotics (300 billion- trying to increase). That's it. I try and get her to drink some Fiji water with lemon everyday as well. I don't think I can afford many more supplements at this time. The probiotics are wiping out my funds, but I really like the brand I am using, (Klaire-Thera-biotic detox). The Sonicare electic tootbrush was a kids version, but still very strong...now she keep's asking for it back (I hid it). She recently had the Great Plains "OAT" test , which showed no issues with yeast or clostridia, but I dunno. She's like a energizer bunny right now, fixated on certain activities...exhausting. I plan to check for c-dif through Quest as well. Can you recommend a brand of coconut water...I can try...she is so finicky. I would love to chat, I just need a few days -thanks! On a personal note- my husband's niece passed yesterday (age 31) of breast cancer. She first got it at age 25, was in remission until this fall. After some radiation/chemo treatments, including removal of a tumor, she was told on Dec 23rd they got it all. 10 days later, it returned and spread. She was such a sweetheart, way too young to die. Her boyfriend proposed to her last Saturday on her 31st b-day and we saw her on Sunday to celebrate. She flashed around her beautiful bling! Thanks for your responses...the support on this forum is truly amazing!

It also comes in flavors which helps with DS. Im sorry, no pressure about chatting at all. It was just a suggestion. No worries. Have you tried Valerian root oral drops, or calmes forte oral tabs or lavender essential oil in her bath just to calm her down. taurine is another supplement that helps with relaxation along with good old magnesium of course. I hope mom and Dd both feel better soon.

I'll try the flavored coconut water...though she's not too keen on coconut. Thanks again!
philamom Posted February 3, 2011 Author Report Posted February 3, 2011 We seem to be getting back on track. Dd was out of school sick this week...returned for half day yesterday. Monday, I received a call from the school nurse...3 reported strep cases in her class & class next door, which they share afternoon recess with (inside, due to snow). Now I just need to rule out the possibility of sitting next to a strep carrier, since her recent desk rearrangement. I should know by tonight/tomorrow. I didn't call for an abx change--waiting to see if she can pull out of this completely. She didn't give me a hard time on returning to school today, so I take that as a great sign.
sf_mom Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I am relieved to know your DD is doing better. One thing we do a little differently.... is we use bactroban nasal ointment in older DS's nose prior to school. It actually adds a layer of protection when in contagious environments. Might ask Dr. Jones about doing this until her immune response is better and no longer responsive. -Wendy
